THE ROBERTSON TREATMENT (America’s Premier Lifestyle Column): Edition 11, Issue 16 Sherri Shepherd – Taking a look at Sherri’s View(November 18, 2008)
*In little over a year actress/comedian Sherri Shepherd has gone from a working actress to major stardom as a co-host on the popular, Emmy-Award winning morning talk-show “The View”. Since joining the “hot-seat” replacing Star Jones, Shepherd has engaged audiences with laughs and controversy (remember her “world is flat” comment), as well as touchy political chatter with her cohorts Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Elizabeth Hasselbeck. Away from the show her life is equally interesting – she’s in the midst of a divorce from her husband, comedian Jeff Tarpley and is also a mother to a special needs child. With all that going on, Shepherd still finds time for occasional acting gigs with a reoccurring role on the top-rated TV show “3rd Rock From the Sun,” and a new role opposite that late comic Bernie Mac in the new animated feature “Madagascar 2”. The Robertson Treatment recently caught up with Sherri to get the scoop on the “ladies” and to find out how she keeps her act together. What have been some of the challenges of having to learn on the job with millions of people watching? It’s difficult to really understand how big the show is and how when you state your opinion that everyone is listening and can take every little thing you say and make it big. It’s been an interesting learning curve and I’ve gotten into some trouble at times while trying to figure things out. Why have you exposed so much of your private life on the show and in your comedy routines? Since I’ve been doing standup that’s how I like to make people laugh. I’m not perfect and things in my life are not perfect, but I look at them and try to make them funny. I’ve always been open – about my marriage and the other challenges in my life, but it has helped other people. So if my vulnerabilities can help other people then so be it. How do you keep from shaking Elizabeth sometimes? That’s what she’s said to me, but when the camera is turned off we are able to go back to being just regular people with real life concerns and issues. As women there are so many other levels that we related to each other on. Fundamentally we have the same belief system, so when the show is over there are other things that we are able to relate to that keeps things real. Actually, Elizabeth is the person who when I was flying back and forth every weekend to see my son provided me with a shoulder to cry on. Now that’s real. You can’t go on a show like ours and let it get personal, because then things will implode, which we’ve already seen on the show. Also, Ms. Whoopi doesn’t allow things to get to out of control. How do you stay grounded with everything that’s going on in your life? It’s a lot of prayer and being grateful for where I am. I recognize that I am blessed to make a great living doing something that I really enjoy. Anytime that I want to complain I think that I could be back at the law firm filing documents and getting coffee.
Playing an animated character is really interesting and is really a lot of work. I thought I would just go in and say the lines, but the producers would have me say a line 15 or 20 times so I was trying hard to make sure that I got everything right. My character thought she had lost her son and as most people know, my son has had some health challenges. So playing this part was really personal to me. I think they really caught the essence of me with this character. What else are you up to? Well I just finished Lee Daniels next film “Push,” with Lenny Kravitz, Monique and Paula Patton. I play a character name Corn Rolls in the film, who really me to some very dark places. I’m also playing Tracey Morgan’s girlfriend on “3rd Rock From the Sun”. Tracey has so much energy and is a lot of fun. I always play the best friend or the receptionist so it’s been great to play the love interest. I’m having a lot of fun. Gil Robertson IV BEST BET – THEATRE The buzz is growing for the semi-biographical dramedy, “NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN,” comedian/actor Brian Copeland’s one-man show currently playing a limited run at the Hudson theatre in Hollywood, CA. Loosely based on his personal experiences of “living as a black man” in America, Copeland provides thought-provoking insights into the African American experience. Wow Factor: I must admit to being fairly intimidated when the vehicle arrived in my driveway. Now I have driven bigger trucks before, but never one emblazed with the venerable Harley Davidson log on its grille. From the beginning I was clearly impressed and looked forward to taking this car for a ride. Ride: The Harley doesn’t drive down the road, it glides… Outfitted with an optional Saleen supercharger performance package, the motor puts out 450 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. Another big plus is the five-speed transmission, superior suspension and solid steering, which will provide you with a confident feel as you enjoy your ride. Comfort: This car is full of bling! Starting with its vintage cooper and black interior, comfortable leather captain’s chairs and an accessible dash, this Harley will please the most finicky road warrior. Spin Control: Even with a fuel efficiency rated at 12 MPG in the city and 15 MPG on the highway, and a base price tag starting in the low $40’s, Ford’s Harley Davidson is more than worth it. The superior style, comfort and capability it provides more than enough reasons to check it out. . Grade: A
