'QUEEN OF GOSPEL' GETS TRIBUTE IN POMONA: Mahalia Jackson was honored Sunday in California.(December 1, 2008)
The "Queen of Gospel," Mahalia Jackson, was remembered Sunday in a musical tribute at the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Pomona, California. Various singers, including the Los Angeles Chapter of the Gospel Workshop of America Choir, performed in honor of Mahalia.
“Jackson left quite a musical legacy, but she is not well known by younger generations,” said Dorothy Shepherd, the chairwoman of the event according to an article by Monia Rodriquez (Dailey Bulletin). "We wanted to keep her legacy alive." The concert - which was themed "Make a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord," was meant to educate people about the musical gifts that Mahalia Jackson had, as well as serve as a thanksgiving to God. Jackson, who died in 1972 at age 60, sang spiritual and Gospel music. She was a supporter of the civil-rights movement in the 1960s and sang at the March on Washington. Historian Taylor Branch told National Public Radio in August that Jackson has been credited for encouraging the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to stray from the prepared speech he was to deliver on the National Mall and to tell the audience about a dream. That deviation resulted in King's "I Have a Dream" speech.
