LET'S TALK ABOUT SEX WITH 21:03: Young artists find ways to handle sexual temptation.(December 5, 2008)
Pentecostal charisma, baptist fire, flourishes of non-denominational worship and a natural Hip Hop flow are the ingredients of young gospel sensations, 21:03.
The award winning production team, PAJAM (Paul "PDA" Allen, J Moss, and Walter Kearney ) was looking for a more youthful version of themselves when they sponsored a talent search in Detroit over 4 years ago. All fellow-Detroiters, Evin Martin, Jor'el Quinn (who replaced original member Sean Grant) and Torrance Greene united in the group after PAJAM hand-picked them to be molded into stars. Formed officially on the twenty-first day of 2003, by three gentlemen who had turned heads working with such artists as Destiny’s Child, N’Sync, Backstreet Boys, Kelly Price, Patti LaBelle, Boyz II Men, fame was virtually built-in for 21:03. With the talent competition win they secured a record deal, artist management and proper mentoring via the strenuous PAJAM artist bootcamp to prepare them to excel in the music industry. Within a year 21:03 snagged the biggest trophy in gospel music, a 2007 Stellar Award for Contemporary Duo/Group of the Year. These 3 bright lights, ranging in ages from 19-22, have quickly risen as leaders of the new school of gospel offering messages relevant to their generation. Things are moving fast for 21:03 and they are determined to let nothing stand in their way. On their second recording, "Total Attention" the song "Everybody Can't Go" is about denouncing distractions to a lifestyle of holiness. Destiny's calling and you need to make some changes, the lyrics admonish. Being young, gifted, talented, cute and saved is an attractive combination to their female fans that sometimes leads to sexual temptation. Evin said even before joining the group he learned to curb the appetite for sin by staying focused on doing the right thing. "It's important to have a focus and a goal because it's easier to stay on track. The thing is, our sin nature is not going anywhere, so if anybody that tells you that is a liar. That's a lie that even penetrated the church and allowed young people to be deceived, because it's like once I get saved, I'm gon' be good. Oh no, that's why you gotta fight harder!," he advises. When 21:03 is touring, in addition to prayer, they have a practical system of brotherly accountability to ward off temptation. "We have this thing called 'Going to get the ice'," Evin explains, "We really don't go too many places, but if one person leaves the room, someone goes with him. Two are better than one so it's always great to have a checks and balance system. When you go to God and you're renewed it's different. You are not conquered by lust, you overcome it." "God wants our total attention and he wants it now," adds Jor'el. "In studying some scriptures for this album, we came across Mark 1:15 which says 'behold the kingdom of God is near.' We came across a young lady the other day and she said 'I'm not done living my life yet.' Your tomorrow might very well be today. That's what we're saying with this album. You have to change your mindset. Whatever your mind is on, whether it's gas prices, females, guys ... God wants your total attention." Torrance sums up how to avoid falling prey to lust saying, "We don't want to risk our salvation, our eternal for the temporal physical thing For a couple minutes of pleasure. C'mon it's not worth it." For more on 21:03 visit them on their MySpace page: www.myspace.com/twentyone03
