*According to Reuters, the man named by the scandal-plagued governor of Illinois to replace President-elect Barack Obama in the U.S. Senate failed to gain entry on Tuesday when the chamber's secretary rejected as incomplete his credentials for the seat.

"I am not seeking to have any type of confrontation. I will now consult with my attorneys and we will determine what my next step will be," said Roland Burris, a Democrat appointed to the seat by fellow Democrat Rod Blagojevich, said afterward.

*The leadership of the U.S. Senate has declared it will not recognize Illinois Governor Rod Blogojevich’s appointment of Roland Burris to fill the seat in the Senate being vacated by President-elect Barack Obama.

The conflict centers on the fact that Blagojevich has been accused by federal officials of trying to sell the Obama Senate seat to the highest bidder.

But last week African American Congressman Bobby Rush came out in support of the appointment declaring that Burris should be seated because there needs to be at least one Black person in the U.S. Senate.

Rush even compared Senate attempts to block the seating of Burris to Southern racists who tried to block integration during the 1960s.

Another irony of history is that if the Senate refuses to seat Burris, the expected court case could be determined by a case in the 1960s when the House of Representatives refused to seat fiery Black New York Congressman Adam Clayton Powell. In that case, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the House saying it was constitutionally required to seat Powell.

Meanwhile, the controversy comes to a head today when Burris arrives in Washington to take his seat. Senate leaders have vowed that will not take place. (source: Taylor Media Services)
