*Robert Ward, a vocalist and guitarist who played with various Motown acts and founded the R&B/funk band Ohio Players, died on Christmas day at his home in Dry Branch in central Georgia, reports the Associated Press. He was 70.

His wife, Roberta, told the Telegraph of Macon that her husband had suffered a stroke in 2001 and never fully recovered.

The Georgia native moved to Ohio and in 1959 founded the Ohio Untouchables, which later became the Ohio Players. Ward left the group well before its resurgence in the 70s with such No. 1 hits as "Fire" and "Love Rollercoaster."

During that decade, Ward moved to Detroit where he performed with the Temptations, Wilson Pickett and other Motown artists.

The one-time blues musician recorded multiple albums over his career, starting in 1991 with "Fear No Evil." His last album, "New Role Soul," was released in 2000.
