2009 GOLDEN GLOBES RECAP: Slumdog Millionaire Sweeps But Tracy Morgan Steals the Show(January 12, 2009)
*Slumdog Millionaire, the riveting thriller from India revolving around the torture of an orphan suspected of cheating on the TV game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," emerged from the Golden Globes as the early favorite in the Academy Awards sweepstakes. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association blessed the flick with a total of four accolades, including Best Picture (Drama), Director, Screenplay and Score. Another of the evening's standouts was Kate Winslet who was named both Best Actress (Drama) and Supporting Actress for Revolutionary Road and the Reader, respectively. The British-born Winslet was joined by fellow countrymen Sally Hawkins, Simon Beaufoy, Danny Boyle and Colin Farrell in bringing the bulk of the trophies in the motion picture categories back to the United Kingdom. In terms of television, the mini-series John Adams (4) and the sitcom 30 Rock (3) were the big winners. And although there were no African-Americans among the Golden Globe recipients, comedian Tracy Morgan brought down the house with the funniest speech of the night (http://www.nbc.com/golden-globes/video/clips/30-rock-wins/926745/) when he accepted on behalf of 30 Rock instead of Tina Fey, the show's producer, writer, creator and co-star. "Tina Fey and I had an agreement that if Barack Obama won, I would speak for the show from now on," he began. "Welcome to post-racial America! I am the face of post-racial America. Deal with it, Cate Blanchett!" He then launched into a rambling rant in which he thanked his "crew" and the Foreign Press Association because "a black man can't get no love at the Emmys."
