ATL RAPPER DOLLA SHOT AND KILLED IN LA: Police have arrested a Georgia man in connection with the slaying.(May 19, 2009)
UPDATE: According to a statement, police in Los Angeles have arrested 23-year-old Aubrey Louis Berry of Georgia in connection with the shooting death of rapper Dolla. As reported earlier, Berry was taken into custody at Los Angeles International Airport with a gun on Monday night. His bail was set at $1 million. PREVIOUSLY REPORTED: *An up and coming Atlanta based rapper named Dolla was shot and killed at an upscale shopping mall that borders Beverly Hills and Los Angeles on Monday. Dolla, an associate of the Akon camp, was fatally shot in the head near a valet stand outside the Beverly Center mall. At EUR press time no arrests have been made, but police were questioning a man found hours later with a gun in the ticketing area of the Los Angeles International Airport, according to reports. Apparently Dolla, 21, whose real name is Roderick Burton II, was shot after an argument with the gunman, his publicist Sue Vannasing told the Los Angeles Times. Police said the man detained at the airport remains in custody for questioning. He is believed to have dropped off a rental car before he was found at the airport with a handgun, said airport police spokesman Sgt. Jim Holcomb. "As the officers approached the suspect, they asked him 'Do you know why we're here?"' Holcomb told The Associated Press. "He put his (hands) up in the air and said, 'Yes, I've got a gun in my waistband. Don't shoot me."' Airport police recovered a loaded 9mm semiautomatic handgun and turned the 20-year-old man over to LAPD. Vannasing said the Atlanta-based Burton and another rapper, D.J. Shabbazz, were waiting at the valet stand after shopping when an argument broke out with another group and Burton was shot. Police Sgt. Ronnie Crump said the other people with the gunman were persons of interest, though no arrests had been made. It was not clear how many people were with the gunman or what the argument was about. Burton worked on the soundtrack for the 2006 dance film "Step Up" and recently released two singles with Akon: "Like This" and "She So Fine." His MySpace page, said he once modeled for Diddy's Sean John clothing line and was signed to Jive and Elektra record labels. According to Wikipedia, Dolla's rap career began as a member of Da Razkalz Cru, who signed to Elektra Records in 2003 and released the single "So Fly".[2] He was known as Bucklyte while a member of the group. "So Fly" was not a hit and the group was dropped from the label soon after. That same year, he met Akon and P. Diddy, the latter of whom hired Dolla as a model for his Sean John line of clothes; Dolla appeared on billboards for the clothing line and modeled across the United States.[2] Dolla signed to Akon's Konvict Muzik label in May 2007, after creating a buzz throughout Atlanta [3]. He made his debut with the single "Who the F*ck Is That?", which was his biggest hit, reaching #82 on the Billboard Hot 100. His song, "Feelin' Myself", is featured on the Step Up soundtrack. The rapper was working on his second album, "A Dolla and a Dream," which was due to be released on Akon's Konvict Muzik label. Learn more about Dolla at his MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/dolla
