MAGIC AND LAKERS MEET IN NBA FINALS: In losing, did LeBron James show poor sportsmanship? (Game Video)(June 1, 2009)
"It's hard for me to congratulate somebody after you just lose to them," LeBron James said. "I'm a winner. It's not being a poor sport or anything like that." *Wow, even with King James, Cleveland got hit in the gut with another jab when it comes their sports teams and their collective self esteem. Saturday night in Orlando, Led by the unstoppable Dwight Howard, the Magic defeated the Cavaliers 103-90 to take game six and close out the Eastern Conference finals. Next up is a meeting with the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals. Like Orlando, over in the Western Conference finals, the Lakers played a similarly impressive game 6 to defeat the Denver Nuggets Friday night, 119-92. That's why they're in the Finals, too. In a game the Cavaliers had to have to stay alive ... surprisingly the team and their main man didn't exactly come out firing on all cylinders the way you would have expected them to. And even though he said their loss wasn't for lack of passion or effort, Cavaliers coach Mike Brown didn't bring his "A" game, either. On the other hand, props have to given the Orlando Magic's mad man acting coach, Stan Van Gundy. It was interesting seeing LeBron James walk off the court without showing love to Dwight Howard and The Magic. He also showered and left the Amway Arena without speaking to the press. "It's hard for me to congratulate somebody after you just lose to them," he told the AP on Sunday. "I'm a winner. It's not being a poor sport or anything like that. If somebody beats you up, you're not going to congratulate them. That doesn't make sense to me. I'm a competitor. That's what I do. It doesn't make sense for me to go over and shake somebody's hand." He also said he sent a congratulatory digital message to Dwight Howard. But still, the bottom line question remains: Is King James guilty of being a poor sport or does he get a pass because he was obviously bummed out because of the loss? In our estimation, the match up between the Lakers the Magic is going to be nothing short of thrilling. Orlando's Hedu Turkaloo, Rashard Lewis and Mickael Pietrus stack up extremely well against the Lakers' LaMar Odom, Pau Gasol and Trevor Ariza. Of course it goes with saying that everybody's waiting to see how the duel for points goes between Kobe "The Black Mamba" Bryant and Dwight "Superman" Howard. The first encounter between the Lakers and the Magic in the seven game NBA Finals, to determine the best team in basketball, is next Thursday night in Los Angeles at Staples Center.
