UK CORNER PERFORMANCE REVIEW: Turning Point(June 22, 2009)
*Legendary cultural hub The Roundhouse in North West London held a three-day festival for young people last month, kicking off with outdoor acoustic sets, buskers, market stalls, unsigned acts, fashion shows, a treasure hunt, poetry, dance, a barbeque and three performers from The Circus Space turning shapes to a soundtrack from the best up-and-coming DJs.
Day two was probably the most exciting day with artistes such as number one selling grime star Tinchy Stryder, Bashy, the outstanding Noisettes and Kano! The Noisettes, who have toured America, were amazing. The pint sized Shingai Shoniwa got her Grace Jones on, clad in all black with a tasselled leather mini skirt and sequined hot pants and vest top. Incorporating her acting experience, her experience as a member of the Lost Vagueness Crew as a burlesque performer and co-creator of the now legendary ‘Golden Egg Routine’, and her circus skills training as a teenager, she was soon arched over the drums barefoot, putting on a theatrical show. Shingai Shoniwa Their hit Don’t Upset the Rhythm could not be sung too many times as far as the audience was concerned, so they kept singing it while the band proceeded to showcase highlights from their punk/soul/rock/indie fused their second album Wild Young Hearts. Kano Kano closed the show in a riotous fashion with songs from his back catalogue as well as his latest offering 140 Grime Street, demonstrating how innovative Grime music is with a performance, which revived the debate about grime music undermining the British rap scene. I don’t understand why he is unsigned. Ebony Bones Sunday was a more chilled affair with an older crowd enjoying highlights including Jazz Alive, Ebony Bones and the closing act VV Brown. The latter looked stunning in her black cat suit. Barefoot, she gave a candid performance with anecdotes about the inspiration for her material such as bad boyfriends. Defying technical problems with her laptop, she sang cuts from her forthcoming album Travelling Like The Light including her latest single Shark In The Water. It was an event for the young and if you lacked energy you would have felt out of place! The youth were boisterous either in their attempts to woo the opposite sex or to dance irresponsibly. The only thing that would have made it better was tighter security to search young people as they entered and to restore order on the dance floor. Hope to see it return next year!© To watch highlights visit: http://www.roundhouse.org.uk/studios/special-events/turning-point The UK Corner covers urban entertainment from a British perspective and is compiled by Fiona McKinson.
