SOUTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR CAUGHT IN WEB OF LIES: Moral shortcomings have political repercussions.(June 29, 2009)
When it comes to South Carolina Gov. Mark Sandford, the moral delimma of the man has had negative consequences for the politician causing an intersection between church and state that is hard to separate.
Last week Sandford was spotted by a reporter returning from an international trip. Sandford, who later admitted to having an affair with a woman in Argentina, resigned his post as head of the Republican Governors Association. But he won't say if he plans to quit his role as governor. And some conservative residents of that state are voicing their disappointment. "I sat with Jenny Sanford in Washington when she was running his first congressional campaign, and my heart just really goes out to them as a family," Dave Woodard told the Associated Press. Woodward, a pollster and political science professor from Clemson University, is a friend of the Sandford family. "I've known them for a long time and have a lot of regard for them." Woodard says the Sanfords, who have four sons are not currently together as a couple -- something that could prevent the governor from remaining in office. Woodard said was shocked to learn that Sanford was not hiking along the Appalachian Trail as previously reported, but instead was on a secret trip to Argentina over Father's Day weekend to visit a woman with whom he admitted to having an extramarital affair. "He has made this bed of attacking Republicans, and so he doesn't have many friends that will rally to him and help him -- so I think he's in real dire straits if he's looking for Republicans to help him," he adds. "But I think a lot will depend on what happens with Mark and Jenny themselves. If they were to appear as a reconciled couple and ask for forgiveness and help, I think the state would rush to embrace them and support them, but you just don't get the feeling that that's where they are today." Friday Sandford met with members of his cabinet to personally apologize to them for his indiscretion and secretiveness.
