TV LAND'S 'SHE'S GOT THE LOOK': Two contestants speak with EURweb(July 10, 2009)
*TV LAND'S “She's Got the Look” broke the mold in the world of fashion and beauty. The reality series, back for a second season, allows women 35 years and older to compete for a chance to enter the modeling world.
The ten contestants are from different walks of life with backgrounds ranging from the carnival circuit to the military. While age and other factors have typically excluded some women from the modeling industry, “She's Got the Look” is redefining what it means to become a supermodel. EURweb spoke with two of the contestants, Cindy Cohen and Dolores DeVega. Cindy Cohen is a statuesque, 39 year-old wife and mother. The mix of her ethnic background contributes to her striking good looks. All of her life, she envisioned herself as a model; however, she had her son at an early age and postponed her dream. Now her son is in college. “It's my time right now,” Cohen said. Cohen also “made a big sacrifice” to become part of “She's Got the Look.” She was leaving behind her new husband. They were sharing their anniversary during the first few days of the show. Still, her family supported her decision. Beyond this being personally fulfilling, Cohen has a goal “to inspire other women ... women out there who think models are perfect.”
Cindy Cohen “Don't give up on your dreams; it doesn't matter how old you are,” Cohen says. She is excited about the opportunities that “She's Got the Look” has offered. Cohen said even though some of the challenges have been difficult, including an episode where she has to face her fear of claustrophobia, she is determined to be successful. She's faced adversity in her past that includes abuse that started at an early age. Cohen is hoping to have future opportunities to host a show that has “depth and inspiration for women.” She is especially looking to work with women who have been battered and women who are living in homeless shelters. Dolores DeVega is another contestant who spoke with EURWeb about her participation on “She's Got the Look.” Easily identified as a silver fox, DeVega entered the modeling career very early on. At that time, women of color were limited to modeling for ethnic publications, and they were not paid nearly as much as models are today. However, DeVega and her friends, who also entered the modeling career as youths, were having fun and enjoying modeling for the sake of it. Now, DeVega, who was instructed by a friend, has a new motivation for modeling, “to represent.” “I had to stop and think a minute in view of my age,” DeVega said of some of the physical challenges involved with the show.
Delores DeVega Nevertheless, DeVega, a 72 year-old wife and grandmother of eight has been a serious contender. She has enjoyed the camaraderie of living in the New York loft with the other contestants. She also likes that she is being true to herself. DeVega made a commitment “to encourage, to inspire, and to represent.” “You can always look good, no matter what age you are,” DeVega says. Several people ask her what keeps her looking so good. “My husband would like me to say it's him; he's a few years my junior. I think I have him by about 7 or 8 years,” DeVega says. DeVega also credits having a youthful spirit, grandchildren, children, reading human interest stories, diet and exercise as part of what keeps her looking and feeling good. She has exercised since the 70s and loves to dance, particularly salsa “before it was vogue.” DeVega says after “She's Got the Look,” she and her dance moves will be preparing for “Dancing With the Stars.” She hasn't gotten the call yet, but viewers will be in for an entertaining eyeful if she does. More than anything, DeVega hopes to reach her full potential in the modeling world. “She's Got the Look” has given her the opportunity to re-enter an arena that has afforded her more opportunity than she had in her youth. DeVega hopes to give seminars and lectures to women, especially those over 55 on makeovers and how to look and be the best they can be.
Beverly Johnson Supermodel Beverly Johnson who is a judge on the show is fully supportive of what “She's Got the Look” is doing for women. “It does so much for my spirit and I'm proud of them. The show has really enhanced my life,” Johnson says. “I like the show, going to work and the women,” she continued. When asked about her own personal success, Johnson talked about being intuitive and taking chances. In addition to the phenomenal career she had in the modeling world, Johnson has an entrepreneurial venture in hair extensions. When the idea was presented to her, Johnson followed her instinct. “We as African American women have a love affair with our hair,” she said. She added that, $100 million dollars later, her instinct on entering the hair business was good. When asked about her own personal success Johnson said, “Someone told me 95% of being successful is showing up ... it's just showing up. I keep showing up and the rest takes care of itself.” That advice can inspire the contestants on “She's Got the Look.” But, then again, the advice and the accomplishments are truly an inspiration to viewers as well. “She's Got the Look” airs Thursdays at 9 PM ET/PT on TV LAND.
