CHRIS SPENCER: ALL IN THE ‘FAMILY’: Comedian and buddies in family comedy DVD ((Vides)Scroll down to watch Chris and Small Frie ham it up on stage(October 7, 2009)
*Funnyman Chris Spencer joins fellow comedians Tommy Davidson, Small Frie, Kenny Johnson, and AJ Jamal for a DVD capturing an evening of hilarity that the whole family can enjoy together.
The stand-up comedy disc, released last month, is called “Family Hour: Comedy For All Ages,” and features more than an hour of clean comedy. “I got kids and I make them laugh every day,” Spencer said about being able to keep it clean. “I don’t use a tart tongue. As a comedian, you’ve got to know when to use it and when not to use it. I have the ability to have Snoop Dogg laugh and Barack Obama laugh. It depends on the forum. I’ve done some church shows and I’ve done some shows for pimps, it just depends.” Church shows? Spencer’s not necessarily known as a “blue” comedian, or a risqué, profane, or obscene comedian, but he’s not known as squeaky clean either. “Absolutely,” he said to the question. “I know what to do at the church function. My jokes may not be about the 3rd Apostle, but I know it wasn’t vain to do my material. I don’t have to reach. If I do a spot on ‘The Tonight Show,’ I can do four minutes squeaky clean. I started off on the road with Jeff Foxworthy. So I was in the Bible Belt, touring being the only black person in a 2500 to 5,000 seat auditorium.” “I have many faces,” he said. “I’ve done shows with Dave Chappelle, Damon Wayans, Chris Rock. I’ve written for Jamie Foxx, Larry The Cable Guy, all the Wayans. I have the ability to do it all. My funny is not limited whatsoever.” Since his start, Spencer has traded in Foxworthy for Jamie Foxx, whose show “The Foxx Hole” is Spencer’s latest gig. Spencer did a short stint as the host of short lived late-night show “Vibe” and has since guest-starred on several television shows, and co-starred in films. For the disc, Spencer joins with some well-known comics and some not-so-well-known comics who all give a stand-up performance even the kids will enjoy. “These guys on the DVD I would consider family,” Spencer said of his co-stars and the play on the disc’s title. “I know AJ and Tommy Davidson from doing standup from when I was a neophyte. Kenny Johnson is one of those guys that was going to the Laugh Factory Comedy Camp and being one of the young guys in the club, so I’ve watched him grow and become this animal that he’s become. Small Frie, she is one of those people that if you want to do a clean show, the first name that comes off of somebody’s tongue when they’re put a church show or a safe show or a clean show together.” Spencer, who’s been in comedy, professionally, for almost 20 years, told EUR’s Lee Bailey that he’s always been the class clown, but it was going to class on the campus of UCLA that got him on the track to making it a career. “The word stand-up comedian came when I met my friend Suli McCullough our junior year at UCLA,” Spencer said. “Some girls were talking to him and they were all over him. So I asked him what his name was and I asked him his major, and he said, “I’m a poli-sci major, but I’m going to be a stand-up comedian” and all these girls were like, ‘Oh my God, he’s so funny.’ And then they said, ‘What about you?’ So I said, ‘I’m a sociology major, but I’m going to be a stand-up comedian, too.’” “Family Hour: Comedy For All Ages,” is available now. Catch Chris Spencer in his upcoming projects “Ball Don’t Lie,” described as a basketball version of ‘8 Mile’ and the spoof flick “Slumdog Virgin.” And look for the new network, NPBN, New Paradigm Broadcast Network, of which Spencer is a Board Member. “We’re going to create programming for educated black people who want something different as well as acculturated Latinos – second and third generation Latinos that don’t speak Spanish so Telemundo and Univision aren’t something they watch. This network will be a blend of Latino and black channel.” Chris Specner explains his Jamaican upbringing on 'Family Hour': Small Frie talks about her stripper friend who forgot she was in church:
