*A new study by Florida State University finds that racial discrimination leaves African American women more susceptible to depression and threatens their mental health.

According to lead researcher Dr. Verna Keith, “Our results show that perceptions of unfair treatment, like other chronic stressors, are psychologically burdensome to African American women.”

Keith explained in the study published in last month’s Sex Roles, an online research journal, discrimination damages Black women’s feelings of being in control of their lives and makes them psychologically less resilient.

The study involved 2,300 adult Black women.

However, older women and women with college educations reported fewer symptoms of depression. (source: Taylor Media Services)
