CHRIS BROWN LAUDED AT UPDATE HEARING: Judge said, 'We have a progress report and it's extremely favorable.'

*Chris Brown was praised for being on his best behavior since being sentenced to probation in his assault case.

Judge Patricia M. Schnegg acknowledged that Brown has completed more than 100 hours of community labor so far, and seven domestic violence counseling sessions, according to the Associated Press.

"We have a progress report and it's extremely favorable," Judge Schnegg said from the bench. "That's excellent."

Brown, 20, who attended the hearing, was sentenced in August to six months of community labor for his felony assault on Rihanna, 21. That amounts to more than 1,400 hours of washing cars, removing graffiti and cleaning and maintaining grounds in his home state of Virginia.

He was also sentenced to five years probation, a year of domestic violence classes, and ordered not to contact Rihanna for the next five years.

Another progress review for Brown is set for Feb. 18.

ALICIA KEYS TO LAUNCH LINE OF JEWELRY: Singer teams with designer for collection of necklaces.

*Alicia Keys is getting into the bling business with a new line of necklaces in partnership with The Barber’s Daughters designer Gisele Theriault.

Due out in fall 2010, the collection will range in price from $85 to $2,500 and feature precious metals and gems inscribed with inspirational messages, reports People.com.

Alicia first met Gisele while she was touring in Toronto through her bandmates, who happened to be buying the jewelry backstage at her show.

“I fell in love with the individuality of the pieces, but more than that, the words that were written on them really resonated with the songwriter in me,” Alicia tells WWD about Gisele’s pieces, which are inscribed with poetry and prayers. “I knew at that moment, for the first time, that through a whole other medium I would be able to spread inspiration, and that’s what got me started.”

A two-day preview of Alicia’s collection of necklaces for The Barbara’s Daughters will take place in New York at Collette Blanchard Gallery at 26 Clinton Street. Alicia’s jewelry has already gotten some celebrity love from Halle Berry, who purchased a one-of-a-kind piece for $40,000 at a charity auction.

JANET JACKSON BACK WITH A&M?: Label reportedly signs artist hoping greatest hits album will generate interest for next studio set.

*A&M Records has quietly signed its former artist Janet Jackson to a new contract, hoping its promotion of her current greatest hits album will spark demand for her upcoming CD of new material.

"A&M wants this CD to remind people how great Janet is," a source tells the New York Daily News. "They're hoping it'll whet the public's appetite for Janet and pave the way for her new music."

Jackson began her career at A&M at 16 and had her biggest U.S. hit on their watch -- "Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814," which moved 8.5 million units in 1989.

Her 1991 move to Virgin Records was not as successful. She started off with a handful of successful CDs, but 2004's "Damita Jo" and 2006's "20 Y.O." were disappointments. Her one Def Jam album, "Discipline," barely went gold.

A&M exec Jimmy Iovine isn't deterred. He's dispatched music producer Rodney Jerkins to oversee production on Janet's upcoming album. The CD, which is in the early stages of recording, is expected to drop in the second quarter of 2010.

"Jimmy has given the mandate to make this Janet record a success,"
says the insider. "He believes that he has the right team in place to finally take Janet back to the top of the music charts. It's a top priority for the label."

DISNEY'S BLACK PRINCESS ALREADY A HIT: Tiana outselling other Disney Princess merchandise by double digit percentages.

*"The Princess and the Frog" merchandise is apparently flying off the shelves despite the film being weeks away from its debut in theaters.

Disney announced that items linked to the studio's first black princess have already begun out-selling other Disney Princess merchandise by double digit percentages.

More than 45,000 Princess Tiana dolls have sold in less than a month with 17,000 selling last week alone. At one major retailer, "The Princess and the Frog" bedding has sold nearly triple the amount of regular Disney Princess bedding.

At Disney Store locations nationwide and DisneyStore.com, the Princess Tiana role-play dresses are selling above all other Disney Princess characters, the studio stated.  Additionally, the Disney Princess Tiana Just One Kiss doll tops FunFare magazine’s “Holiday Hot Dozen” and the Toys”R”Us "Fabulous 15" holiday lists. The doll was also recently nominated for the
“2009 Girls Toy of the Year” award by the Toy Industry Association.

Meanwhile, "The Princess and the Frog" is also a hit on the social media circuit:  an exclusive YouTube video series dedicated to the film premiered this week on www.YouTube.com/DisneyLiving. The series will provide an inside look at how some of the most interesting products came to life and will release new videos weekly leading up to the national release of the film on Dec. 11.

Fans can get regular updates on "The Princess and the Frog" and its inspired products on Facebook www.facebook.com/DisneyLiving or on Twitter www.twitter.com/DisneyLiving for a chance to win unique merchandise.

SCALPERS STUCK WITH CHRIS BROWN TIX: Folks trying to make money off of his LA concert met with low demand.

*The New York Daily News found some disgruntled ticket scalpers who said they had trouble reselling tickets for Chris Brown's sold-out "Fan Appreciation" concert in Hollywood this week.

Plenty of aftermarket tickets were still available online just hours before the Wednesday night show at the intimate Avalon venue - two miles from where the singer attacked Rihanna last February. Some sellers even tried to unload tickets below face value.

They blame the dampened demand on Brown's felony conviction and Rihanna's recent account of the horrific night to ABC's Diane Sawyer.

"It seems he lost a lot more fans than I expected." said Danny McElroy, 18, an executive assistant from Ventura County who bought four tickets with the intent to sell two at a premium. McElroy was still looking for a buyer Wednesday morning.

"The Avalon is small and I expected it to sell out the first day, but it didn't. I'm not much of a fan, but I bought these tickets for my girlfriend," he said. "I've had trouble selling (them). I'm just trying to get back  what I paid for them."

       Even professional brokers overestimated demand.

"If I had Chris Brown tickets last year, I was going to be able to sell them for a lot. This time I had more ads up on Craigslist, and I never even got a single call," said Kyle Jones of Konnected Tickets in West Hollywood. Jones eventually sold his four tickets with the help of a friend.
He didn't make a profit.

"People weren't willing to pay more like they did for Jay-Z," he said, referring to the rapper's concert in Los Angeles last week.
"Personally, I think the situation makes you think differently of (Brown) and his singing. I can't even listen to him sing. It only takes one thing for people to look at you different."

PRECIOUS WINS PGA AWARD: Producers Guild of America gives film its Stanley Kramer honor.

*The Producers Guild of America will present the producers of
“Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push' by Sapphire” with its Stanley Kramer Award at the 21st Annual PGA Awards ceremony on Jan. 24 at the Hollywood Palladium.

The trophy was established in 2002 to salute works illuminating “provocative social issues in an accessible and elevating fashion” in honor of Kramer, whose films include “The Caine Mutiny,” “High Noon,” “The Defiant Ones,” and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.”

Previous recipients include “Milk,” “The Great Debaters,” “An Inconvenient Truth,” “Good Night, and Good Luck,” “Hotel Rwanda,” “Innocent Voices,” “In America,” “Antwone Fisher” and “I Am Sam.”

“‘Precious,’ in theaters nationwide today, is a remarkable film that sends a powerful message of hope - brilliantly reminding us that we have the power to persevere regardless of life’s difficulties. Stanley Kramer’s legacy is ideally celebrated with the selection of this very worthy film,”
said PGA Awards Co-Chairs David Friendly and Laurence Mark.

The film is produced by Lee Daniels, Sarah Siegel-Magness, and Gary Magness. Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Lisa Cortés, and Tom Heller are exec producers.

“Precious” has grossed $8.7 million for Lionsgate in its first 10 days even though it’s been in only 174 venues. So far, the film has been honored with the Toronto Film Festival’s Cadillac People’s Choice Award, and as an Official Selection at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival - Un Certain Regard. It also won awards at Sundance including the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition.

SHAQ THROWS HIS FIRST ART SHOW: 'Size DOES Matter' exhibition includes essay by author James Frey.

*Cleveland Cavaliers center Shaquille O’Neal is moonlighting as a curator overseeing an art exhibition titled “Size DOES Matter,’’ coming in February to New York’s nonprofit Flag Art Foundation.

Under the theme of "scale," the 7-foot-1 NBA star is putting together the show featuring 52 large pieces of contemporary art from 39 artists, including Maurizio Cattelan, Andreas Gursky and Ron Mueck – who contributes a sculpture of a naked, hairless giant called "Untitled (Big Man.)"

“New York is the art capital, so I’m pleased to be starting at the top,’’ O’Neal, 37, said in an e-mail interview with Bloomberg.com. “It was a little harder than I thought it would be. When you think about what each of the artists put into their work, what they are expressing and want to share with the world, you feel bad about having to narrow it down.’’

He said he chose pieces he “can relate to.’’

The writer James Frey, whose memoir "A Million Little Pieces" was found to contain fabrications, is writing an essay for the exhibition catalog.

Shaq told Bloomberg News curating was like playing basketball: "I have a responsibility to the artists, who are my 'teammates.' We all have to make each other look good -- no different than what I do on the court."

BRITAIN BALKS AT MARIAH'S DIVA DEMANDS: Singer wanted dozens of kittens and doves for a public appearance, but was turned down for safety reasons.

*When Mariah Carey reportedly requested that she be surrounded by 20 white kittens and 100 white doves while lighting a Christmas tree at a British shopping center, local health and safety officials had to put their foot down.

According to London's Daily Mail, an insider said: "We did manage to source the doves that we were going to release into the sky, but the kittens proved terribly difficult. In the end, it was made clear that due to health and safety, there was no way we could have the animals at Westfield.  We do not allow pets into Westfield - that rule would apply for everyone."

Carey's rider also asked for a Rolls Royce to drive her along a pink carpet and up to the pink podium – where she is to wave a wand to turn on the lights. She also reportedly asked for confetti shaped like butterflies to shower over her at the end.

She has also requested an entourage of 15 along with about 80 security guards, the Daily Mail reported.

EDDIE MURPHY GETS NICE AND 'FLUFFY': Actor to produce buddy comedy for Paramount Pictures.

*Eddie Murphy is set to produce and possibly star in "The Misadventures of Fluffy," an R-rated road trip movie for Paramount Pictures.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film features talking animals -- evoking memories of Murphy's "Dr. Dolittle" franchise -- and has an element of social comedy reminiscent of his 1983 hit "Trading Places."

Murphy could potentially star in the film, but as it stands now, his only formal attachment is as a producer. Sam Pitman and Adam Cole-Kelly sold the pitch for the comedy and will write the script.

The duo came to prominence with a project called "The Diversification of Noah Miller," a race-themed story about a man who tries to bring cultural enlightenment to his son by befriending people of another race. Tyler Perry is attached to produce and potentially star in that project.

Paramount is already in business with Murphy on "Beverly Hills Cop IV."

Murphy's last two live-action films, "Imagine That" and "Meet Dave,"
struggled at the box office, but he is involved in a number of high-profile development projects, including a "Fantasy Island" reboot. He'll also reprise his prominent voice role of Donkey in the upcoming "Shrek Forever After."

DANNY GLOVER TO PUT A RING ON IT: Actor set to marry his longtime Brazilian girlfriend before year's end.

*There are reports that Danny Glover will exchange wedding vows next month with his Brazilian girlfriend of six years, Eliane Cavalleiro.

According to the O Globo newspaper, Glover told a spokesperson for the Rio de Janeiro film festival this week that he and his fiancée have yet to decide if they will live in Glover's native U.S. after the wedding.

"(Living together in the U.S.) that's not definitive," he said. "We can live here (in Brazil) and there. All I know is that I want to be with her. We'll see how the logistics work out."

Glover, 63, and 43-year-old Cavalleiro met in 2003 when he attended the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

MICHAEL JACKSON'S 'MOTOWN 25' GLOVE FOR SALE: 'Holy Grail' of MJ memorabilia headed for auction in NY.

*The white glove worn by Michael Jackson as he moonwalked his way into pop culture history at the 1983 Motown 25 television special will go on the auction block Saturday in New York.

"There is no question it is the Holy Grail of Michael Jackson," said Darren Julien, president and CEO of Julien's Auctions, the company behind the sale at New York's Hard Rock Cafe.

Julien's estimates the value of the glove conservatively at $40,000-$60,000 but expects it to sell for much higher.

"I have talked to more than 20 very interested serious clients all over the world who will be bidding on the piece and all have expressed interests over $200,000-$300,000," Julien said.

Roughly 80 Jackson lots will be up for bid, consisting of pieces that come from friends and family who were given the items by Jackson himself, Julien said. The auction company values the MJ collection at $80,000 to $100,000 but Julien said its pre-auction estimates are intentionally very conservative to help generate interest.

Julien's had been preparing for a huge auction of Jackson memorabilia in April – two months before the singer's death – but it was canceled after an agreement with Jackson, who had filed a lawsuit demanding the return of certain items. During the promotion for that sale, Julien's had amassed a large database of Jackson collectors from Asia to the Americas.

Collectors can also bid for an Elvis Presley ring, James Brown's suits and Kurt Cobain's finger prints, taken from the late Nirvana front man when he was arrested for trespassing while intoxicated in 1986 at the age of 19.

CASTER SEMENYA TO KEEP GOLD MEDAL: S. African ministry says results of her gender tests will be kept confidential.

*South African track star Caster Semenya gets to keep her 800-meter gold medal from the world championships, and the results of her gender tests will be kept confidential, the South African sports ministry announced Thursday.

The ministry also said in a statement that the International Association of Athletics Federations has agreed to allow the 18-year-old to keep her prize money.

"Whatever scientific tests were conducted legally within the IAAF regulations will be treated as a confidential matter between patient and doctor," the sports ministry said. "As such there will be no public announcement of what the panel of scientists has found. We urge all South Africans and other people to respect this professional ethical and moral way of doing things."

Before the 800 final in Berlin, the IAAF said it had ordered gender tests because of Semenya's muscular build and dramatic improvement in times.
The case sparked outrage in South Africa, and the IAAF was accused of violating her privacy. South African track officials were accused of failing to protect her.

Australian newspapers said in September that Semenya has male and female sexual organs, but the IAAF has refused to confirm or deny those reports.

'PRECIOUS' VS. 'THE BLIND SIDE': Journalist calls one a "red state" version of the other.

*The Hollywood Reporter's Steven Zeitchik posted a piece Thursday comparing the new Sandra Bullock movie "The Blind Side" with "Precious,"
calling the former a "red state" version of the latter.

Zeitchik begins: "It’s almost impossible to watch “The Blind Side,” a story of race and the power of education to overcome life’s brutalities, and not think of “Precious,” a story of race and the power of education to overcome life’s brutalities.

Both settle on misunderstood, gentle-giant, inner-city teenagers, and give them ways to escape their past with the help of people who care for them after their real families don’t.

"…If “Precious” (character and movie) finds its redemption amid the do-gooder volunteerism of liberal New York, “Blind Side” does it amid the college-football Republicanism of upper-middle-class Tennessee.

MORGAN FREEMAN PLUGS INTO DIGIBOO: New venture allows folks to rent movies through flash drives.

*Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary's Revelations Entertainment has thrown its financial resources and technical expertise behind Digiboo, a new venture that allows consumers to rent films by plugging a small USB 3.0 flash drive into kiosks that will be set up at retail outlets.

The L.A.-based Digiboo launches a pilot program in January with Oregon-based Movie Gallery that will see 100 digital movie kiosks operate in Hollywood Video and Movie Gallery retail stores, according to Variety.

Samuel Edge, the CEO of Digital Revelations, will become Digiboo's chief technology officer and be involved in day-to-day operations in the new venture.

Revelations' last tech venture was the digital movie-store ClickStar, a joint venture between chipmaker Intel and Revelations that launched at a time when consumers may not have been ready for digital downloading.

McCreary and Edge said things are changing. Downloads are speedy and easily played on home entertainment devices. Their involvement in the venture came from a continuing dialogue with Intel.

"We were invited by Intel a year ago to help put together a technical strategy to distribute digitally, using USB as the medium," Edge said. "USB 3.0 is remarkable for its portability and the ability to walk to a kiosk and walk away in eight to 15 seconds with a movie in your pocket."

Cohen said that the price point will vary during the pilot program but will likely be comparable to the $3.50-$5.50 that Hollywood Video and Movie Gallery charges for rentals. But Digiboo kiosks will offer more than 1,000 movies and TV shows for rental and sale, he said, and the download system eliminates the need for a trip to return a DVD.

JOHN MAYER SAYS BACK OFF OF KANYE:  'It's the MTV Video Music Awards. It's not the G8 summit.'

*John Mayer says it's time for the media and public to pipe down on the Kanye West hatred and move on.

The rocker has teamed up on a new track with Taylor Swift, the victim of West's onstage protest at the "MTV Video Music Awards," but he's not about to join those publicly hating the rap star.

"Here's how we work in America: We raise them and then we drop them... It went like this: 'That was messed up Kanye! You deserve a punishment.' Then, all of a sudden, the punishment got so severe; I was like, 'Time out!'" Mayer told "Access Hollywood."

"If you just woke up now and you looked at the backlash on Kanye, you'd think that he actually firebombed the stage... It's the MTV Video Music Awards. It's not the G8 summit."

Mayer says he's sure West feels horrible about protesting Swift's Best Female Video win: "I think he's remorseful. I think this guy's got to be reconsidering how he's gonna act, and that's fine. We learn from our little mistakes that happen in public."

BLACK FIREFIGHTERS TRY TO BLOCK WHITE PROMOTIONS: African American firemen in New Haven still challenging exam.

*A group of black Connecticut firefighters hopes to block promotions for white firefighters who won a discrimination case before the U.S. Supreme Court.

The black New Haven firefighters argue in papers filed Monday that they still have a right to challenge the validity of the promotional exam, reports the Associated Press.

The white firefighters sued New Haven after the city threw out results of some 2003 promotion exams when too few minorities did well. The Supreme Court ruled in June in their favor.

The attorney for the white firefighters filed papers in U.S. District Court Friday asking for promotions. Attorneys for New Haven filed similar papers. But the attorneys for seven black firefighters say there still has been no finding that the promotional tests were valid.

DONNIE MCCLURKIN SPEAKS OUT AGAINST HOMOSEXUALITY: But he admits he has homosexual thoughts.

*Pastor Donnie McClurkin has shown no tolerance for homosexuality calling gays “vampires”  and “perversions.”  His anti-gay rants were videotaped at the Church of God in Christ’s Holy Convocation Youth Service in Memphis last weekend and were uploaded to Youtube.com

McClurkin, who is admittedly ex-gay, lambasted Tonex, the gospel star who recently confirmed his long-rumored homosexuality. According to reports, McClurkin said Tonex is a "perversion" and must pray away the gay.

"God did not call young people to such perversion. Society has failed him, his church has failed him ... I would be homosexual to this day if Jesus hadn't delivered (me). "I see feminine men, feminine boys, everywhere I go ... No, don't applaud 'cuz it ain't funny. It's because we failed. I see them everywhere."

In second video, McClurkin turns his hate toward young lesbians saying "These young girls are just as bad as the boys in homosexuality, you don't see it. They can hide ... but there are some evil young hard butch girls."

The COGIC is embroiled in numerous lawsuits, criminal investigations and internal church investigations around sexual abuse involving clergy. McClurkin recently suggested he still had gay sexual urges and compared homosexuality to diabetes saying "I don't eat sugar, but it doesn't mean that I don't want sugar."

CHURCH BUS CAUGHT IN SHOOTOUT: Passengers had to duck for cover.

*Passengers on a church bus were caught in the middle of a shootout Sunday in Salisbury, North Carolina. None of the 15 passengers was injured when two bullets struck the First Calvary Baptist Church bus, but one passenger with a pacemaker experienced chest pains and was admitted to Rowan Regional Medical Center.

According to the SalisburyPost.com, it happened near the Civic Apartments Complex Sunday afternoon. Witnesses onboard told police "guys were shooting back and forth at each other," with some in a gray Honda and black Mercury, one on the front porch of a house on Forney Street, and one man shooting from behind the bus. When the shooting stopped the driver sped the bus back to the church.

Police found a bullet hole near the back of the bus with the bullet lodged in fiberglass. They also found a scrape mark which appeared to be made by a bullet grazing the vehicle from front to back. Now residents are questioning whether police are doing enough to prevent violence in the city.

"We need more police presence. Why aren't there more officers on the street?" asked William Peoples, a member of Calvary Baptist and former president of the local NAACP. Peoples said he isn't surprised the church bus got caught in a shootout.

The bus driver said the shooting scene isn't a part of the regular bus route. He drove there on request to pick up a member who didn't have transportation that day.

POLITICIANS STAND UP FOR GOD: Defense papers submitted against Agnostic group.

*A group of U.S. legislators are defending their right to use religious slogans on a newly constructed public building. The Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation has challenged the national motto “In God We Trust,” and the Pledge of Allegiance, which includes the word “God” as unconstitutional. And the atheist group wants the words erased from the face of the newly built Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, D.C.

According to World Net Daility,The American Center for Law and Justice, three U.S. senators and 41 representatives filed a friend-of-the-court brief in a case brought in July against the building’s architect by the atheist and agnostic organization in U.S. District Court.

The FFRF claimed that the use of tax dollars to add the engravings lacks a secular purpose and has the primary effect of endorsing a religious viewpoint. The ACLJ brief argues that the national motto and Pledge of Allegiance accurately reflect our nation's historical foundation on a belief in God and contends that the constitutionality of both "God" references is well established in case law.

EUR MOTIVATIONAL NOTE

Today’s ‘Live Better With Willie Jolley’ Tip: Settling For The Leftovers

Most people settle for the leftovers life gives them rather than creating a banquet table for themselves. They dream little dreams, think little thoughts, and get little results. Why?

Because most don’t think they can do any better. They settle for mediocrity rather than going the extra mile for excellence. They don’t think they can do it. As Henry Ford said, “If you think you can or think you can’t, either way you’re probably right.” You accomplish what you think you can accomplish. You can if you think you can, and you probably won’t if you think you can’t.

Most people go to their graves with their dreams still inside of them. Most of us act like the man who was told to go into a bank and take whatever he wanted. He took a penny and left because he didn’t think he could handle any more! He thought it would be too hard to keep the wealth. Ladies and gentlemen, we are what we think about. Think big!
