16-YR-OLD COLLEGE STUDENT/ENTREPRENEUR: Tevyn Cole makes it cool to be smart with educational clothing line.(November 20, 2009)
*Tevyn Cole launched School Me Clothing when he was only 10 yrs. old. Six years later, the young man is still pushing forward with his mission – to educate his peers through fashion.
Cole, who is one of Steve Harvey’s Disney Dreamers, a summer Japanese exchange student and early entrance honor student at Eastern Michigan University, is working hard to be a successful entrepreneur and influential member of society. Tevyn developed School Me Clothing as an answer to the lack of Black history taught in public schools. The shirts and jeans display various graphics, dates and messages that represent a Black inventor or historic moment in Black history. The clothing line has been praised by several celebrities and figure heads including Russell Simmons. Countless entertainers have “School Me” t-shirts including President Barack Obama, Will and Jada Smith, Mo’Nique, Keyshia Cole, Jesse Jackson, Disney’s Kyle Massey, Jeff Johnson and the Nappy Roots. Tevyn Cole is committed to impacting the progress of urban youth and adults by helping them learn more about their own history. “Just like music, the youth are heavily into fashion. As a teenage student, I know that our history isn’t efficiently taught in school and it is up to us to teach ourselves. Therefore, I thought it was a perfect fit to mix the two worlds of fashion and facts,” says Tevyn Cole, founder of School Me Clothing. As a 16 yrs. old, he displays very mature characteristics and has been put on the list of “future leaders of the world” by film music supervisor, Jabari Ali, business mogul Russell Simmons, director Hakim Kalfani, designer Kevin Leong, activist Glen Farraye, and comedian and entrepreneur Dick Gregory. Tevyn has received a Pepsi Freedom Hero Award from WJLB FM 98, a Kids That Care Award from PBS, Citizen of the Year nomination and was a semi-finalist in the 2008 Huggable Heroes program sponsored by Build-A-Bear Workshop. Tevyn is an active volunteer, participating in events with Black Men In Union, NAACP, Rainbow Push Coalition and Parents Together Organization. Most of the clothing, except the t-shirts, is hand-stitched and made to order. The clothing line is currently seeking investors and manufacturers.
