Bailey Rae played a brief set on Nov. 19 as a late addition to learning disability charity Mencap's Little Noise Sessions, held at London's Union Chapel, but the Tabernacle show was her full live comeback. TIME EXAMINES 'POLITICS OF PERCEIVING SKIN COLOR': Article highlights research that shows political views can skew skin color perception. *Time magazine's Tiffany Sharples O'Callaghan writes about a new study that sets out to determine whether political views can skew skin color perception. To put it simply, research published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that people who disagreed with President Obama's views tended to believe he is darker skinned than he actually is, while his supporters thought he was lighter skinned. O'Callaghan says the study included three experiments: In all three, participants viewed photographs of either President Obama or a fictional biracial politician. In some of the photographs, the candidate's skin tone was darkened or lightened, while others were left untouched. Study participants, who were also polled about their political views, were shown the various photographs. In the first experiment, where an unknown candidate was used, participants were made to believe that he either shared or opposed their views. In the second two experiments, images of Barack Obama from the 2008 presidential campaign were shown to participants. In all three cases, people who agreed with the politician's views were more likely to pick lighter-skinned images of him; people who disagreed were more likely to pick darker-skinned images. The studies were conducted by Eugene Caruso from the University of Chicago's business school, in collaboration with Nicole Mead from the Tilburg Institute for Behavioral Economics Research at the Netherlands' For the two experiments that used photographs of President Obama, there were not enough African American participants to accurately assess whether there were any major differences in perception between black and white participants (10% or fewer of the subjects were African American in both trials), but for the first experiment, which had a broader subject pool, researchers say that demographics had no bearing on the influence of political bias. They write: "[P]articipants completed a number of demographic measures, none of which had a significant effect..." While other factors may not have had much influence, when it came to biracial candidates at least, political views were strongly correlated with bias. In one study, participants were also shown photographs of John McCain. "Across the three studies reported here," the researchers write, "we found that partisans not only 'darken' those with whom they disagree, but also 'lighten' those with whom they agree." The findings suggest that race bias is very much alive and well in the U.S., and more ingrained than we might like to believe. On the one hand, they could attend her tight-knit, Argentinian family's picnic, although that would probably involve dealing with pressure from her parents to settle down and get married. On the other hand, they could simply saunter into Manhattan for whatever serendipitous adventure might lay in wait. The lovebirds impulsively agree to base their decision on a fateful flip of the coin, blissfully unaware of just how much is riding on its landing head versus tails. For, while the duty-bound barbecue will basically be an uneventful, if socially-awkward, annoyance, a day in the city will morph into a harrowing, never-ending nightmare. And how do we know this? Because Uncertainty is a bifurcated drama depicting exactly what will transpire, depending on which direction Kate and Bobby take off the bridge. The picture was co-written and co-directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, the same brains behind The Deep End (2001), an equally-compelling whodunit starring Tilda Swinton. To make it easy for the audience to keep the two strands straight, one story features the protagonists wearing yellow and heading into Chinatown, the other, wearing green and going to Kate's folks' place in Brooklyn. There's no reason to reveal the details of the family picnic at all, because it essentially serves as mundane counterpoint to the riveting alternative. Meanwhile, the plot of the former thickens right off the bat when they find a cell phone left behind on the seat of their taxicab by the previous passenger. The desperate owner calls to retrieve it, and Bobby unwittingly arranges a meeting in a nearby Chinese restaurant. But the guy happens to have mob connections and is shot dead on the street just as he's approaching the place. Suddenly, instead of a leisurely lunch, Bobby and Kate find themselves on the run with a gangster in hot pursuit. Soon, they're hopelessly embroiled in a high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse with a shadowy figure offering as much as a half-million dollars for the phone when he's not threatening to kill them. A brilliantly-conceived, well-executed, micro-budgeted, action-packed thriller which gives a whole new meaning to 4th of July fireworks.

CHURCH GAS LEAK: Youth choir members hospitalized. *A carbon monoxide leak sent 30 children and teenagers to area hospitals after they got sick during a church choir rehearsal in Des Moines, Iowa. According to a Chicago Tribune report, a generator used during church functions caused the sickness during a three-hour choir practice. Hospital officials said everyone was treated and released with no long-lasting effects from the gas. Des Moines police said the building has been ventilated and should cause no further incidents. Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness and other symptoms. Inhaling high levels can cause death. MINISTER ARRESTED: Attempted rape among charges filed. *A youth minister in Coral Springs, Florida has been arrested and charged with child molestation. According to the Sun Sentinel, police charged Russell Dion Lewis, 28, with custodial battery and 10 counts of lewd and lascivious molestation. Lewis was held Sunday in the Broward County jail on $20,000 bond. Lewis also was fired from his position as assistant music and youth minister. David Hughes, senior pastor at Church by the Glades in Coral Springs, spoke from the pulpit last Sunday about the arrest. ``A kid cannot give consent. We are all about forgiving,' Hughes told the congregation. ``But when it comes to our children, we're pretty hard-nosed around here.' There’s no word on whether Lewis has claimed innocence or guilt. Lewis was hired about two years ago when he moved to Florida from Hobbs, N.M.
*More studies show a growing number of college students have no religious affiliation. And that’s making way for students to promote atheism through what they call a Godless campus crusade. In existence for ten years, members of the Atheist and Agnostic Society at Iowa State University say they want to raise the profile of religious skepticism among the student body. "A lot of people on campus either don't know we exist or are afraid of us or hate us," Alex Bodnar said in an interview, adding that "People assume we're rabble-rousing, when we're one of the gentlest groups on campus." Bodnar is president of the ISU Atheist and Agnostic Society. According to a recent study, Campus affiliates of the Secular Student Alliance have multiplied from 80 in 2007 to 100 in 2008 and 174 this fall, providing the atheist movement new training grounds for future leaders. In another sign of growing acceptance, at least three universities, including Harvard, now have humanist chaplains meeting the needs of the not-so-spiritual. With the growth has come soul-searching — or the atheist equivalent — about what secular campus groups should look like. HATE CRIMES ON THE RISE: Bad economy could lead to bad behavior.
The election of the first black president and hot-button issues such as abortion and gay marriage contributed to the spikes, anti-bias groups say. "There is this kind of extremism going on," says Hilary Shelton, director of the NAACP Washington bureau. He said President Barack Obama's election and the recession led to a backlash against blacks as some people look for someone to blame for hard economic times. Hate crimes based on sexual orientation increased 3% to 1,297,although the number of people victimized went up 13% to 1,706. Geo Vaughn, 23, of Queens, N.Y, said lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender people are more vulnerable now because they are increasingly in the public eye in the debate over equal rights, including a California vote that overturned a new law allowing same-sex marriage. EUR MOTIVATIONAL NOTE Today’s ‘Live Better With Willie Jolley’ Tip: Growth Is Painful, But Necessary Most people don’t live life to the fullest because they have fear. They let fear rob them of life and the joys of living. I don’t want you to be reckless and foolish, but I do want you to take chances and challenge yourself. If you’re afraid to take some risks, you will never grow, never stretch and never reach your potential. Sometimes it may be painful, but there is no growth without pain. That’s why they’re called "growing pains." What would you think if you had a baby who was three years old and had not grown from infancy? You’d take the baby to the doctor. Or suppose the baby fell down once and just stopped trying to walk? You’d know there was something wrong because you know that without falling and getting back up, the baby would never learn to walk. We cannot stop trying just because we fall or just because it is painful. Remember, all things are possible if you can just believe.
