GOOGLE EXPLAINS RACIST FIRST LADY PHOTO: Image search for Michelle Obama showed offensive picture among its most popular.

*Google has purchased online ads in an effort to explain why the most popular Google Image search result for Michelle Obama is a racist picture in which her face is depicted as a monkey.

The Google ad, titled "Offensive Search Results," appears directly over the offensive pictures of Mrs. Obama. The advertisement reads, "Sometimes our search results can be offensive. We agree."

It then continues with a longer explanation of why certain search results appear, and why they may be highly ranked.

"Sometimes Google search results from the Internet can include disturbing content, even from innocuous queries. We assure you that the views expressed by such sites are not in any way endorsed by Google. [...] We apologize if you've had an upsetting experience using Google. We hope you understand our position regarding offensive results." [Read the full explanation here:  http://www.google.com/resultsinfo.html]

According to SearchEngineLand, the racist image was previously removed by Google on the grounds that the site hosting the Michelle Obama picture "violated Google's guidelines by serving malware to visitors."

Now, however, the offensive photo has been posted to another site that does not violate Google rules.

J.LO LAUGHS OFF AMA TUMBLE: 'That was part of the choreography,' she joked Monday.

*What else can one do but make light of a live TV slip up seen by millions of people in the Eastern time zone.

An embarrassed Jennifer Lopez called into Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM radio show on Monday to discuss what happened the night before, when she fell on her behind during a comeback performance on the "American Music Awards"

"Did I trip a little bit? I don't even remember," joked Lopez, 40. "Yeah, I meant to do that. That was part of the choreography."

Seacrest gave her props for immediately jumping back up and finishing the performance.

"The measure of things isn't what happens when you fall, it's how you recover when you fall," she said.

CONRAD MURRAY'S PATIENTS WELCOME RETURN: One woman told reporters, 'He's a good doctor, he's a kind man.'

*Turns out patients of Michael Jackson's doctor Conrad Murray have no problem with him being at the center of the King of Pop's homicide investigation.

The cardiologist returned to work at his Houston medical clinic on Monday for the first time since the pop star's death in June and his patients welcomed him back with open arms, reports the Associated Press.

Murray was greeted by several patients and the pastor of his church when he arrived at the Armstrong Medical Clinic. One church member held up a handwritten sign that read "Welcome Back."

Patients later praised Murray's work as a cardiologist and called him a community role model.

"He's a good doctor, he's a kind man," Ransom Craddock, 81, told the AP as he sat outside the clinic, a nondescript brown brick building next to a supermarket in a lower-income area of north Houston. "We all in this community welcome him back. We need him in this community."

Ruby Mosley praised Murray for providing care to low-income patients and said she believes very little about what the media has reported about his possible role in Jackson's death.

"I can't tell you the joy. We were proud to see him," Mosley, 80, said of the visit she and a group of patients had with Murray at the clinic on Friday. "I see him as a physician and a friend."

Murray, who was scheduled to see six patients on Monday, didn't speak with reporters before entering the clinic.

FIRST LADY ORDERS THIGH-HIGH BOOTS: French store to send Michelle Obama a black pair with flat heels in size 9 ½.

*Cue the controversy - Michelle Obama is about to kick up her shoe game with some thigh-high luxury boots from France.

The AFP is reporting that the First Lady's new shoemaker, Robert Clergerie, said she has ordered a black pair with flat heels as well as another pair of calf-length boots in soft beige buckskin, both in size 9 ½.

The request was sent in by a retailer in the Obamas' hometown Chicago after Michelle could not find the exact style she wanted. One of the pairs was modified slightly from the catalog model at her request.

Clergerie -- who included a small note to the First Lady with the order -- is one of the few remaining great shoemakers in Romans-sur-Isere, a small town in southwest France that has been renowned for its shoes for centuries, AFP reported. He has previously made footwear for Madonna, Bianca Jagger and French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.

DULE HILL BACK FOR 5TH SEASON OF 'PSYCH': USA renews comedy with a 16-episode order.

*The USA Network crime comedy "Psych," co-starring former "West Wing"
actor Dule Hill, has been renewed for a fifth season with a fresh order of 16-episodes, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The series stars James Roday as a fake psychic with great observational skills and Hill as his best friend and partner in their police consulting business.

"Psych" was a breakout hit for the network when it launched in July 2006 as the highest-rated USA series debut. It has consistently delivered solid ratings, especially in the younger demographics.

"Psych" will face a challenge in January when the second half of its fourth season will run for the first time without its formidable lead-in, "Monk," which is wrapping its eight-season run in December.

USA is still finalizing its scheduling plans for January, but "Psych" is rumored to return with original episodes January 29 and remain in its Friday 10 p.m. slot. The show's fifth season is expected to premiere in summer 2010.

USHER'S ALBUM RELEASE PUSHED BACK: Recently-announced Dec. 21 date has been scrapped; new date yet to be determined.

*Jive Label Group has cancelled the Dec. 21 release date of Usher's new album "Raymond v. Raymond," and a new date is still being determined, a rep for the company told Billboard.com.

The date change is designed to give the album the proper setup time that it deserves, according to the rep. "This is a solid album that we believe in. We want to give it a proper launch."

"Raymond's" lead single, "Papers," holds the No. 2 spot on the current Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Usher's last album, 2008's "Here I Stand," has sold 1.2 million units, according to Nielsen SoundScan. His biggest-selling album to date is 2004's "Confessions," whose total stands at 9.7 million units.

CORINNE BAILEY RAE RETURNS TO THE STAGE: British widow debuts new songs at emotional London gig.

*Corinne Bailey Rae has performed her first full concert since the sudden death of her husband, saxophonist Jason Rae, from an accidental drug overdose in March 2008.

Monday night's concert at the Tabernacle, West London, attended by about 500 people, saw her debut songs from her second album, "The Sea."

According to Billboard, "much of the new material is a departure from the breezy pop soul of her self-titled debut record, which hit No. 1 in the United Kingdom in 2006 and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 in 2007."

Bailey Rae played just three tunes from her first album -- "Like a Star" and an encore of "Put Your Records On" and "Til It Happens to You" – while spending more time on the deeply personal songs from her new album. Highlights of the set included the emotional ballads "I'd Like to Call It Beauty" and "I'd Do It All Again" and the upbeat "Paris Nights and New York Mornings," likely to be the first full single release from the album.

Bailey Rae played a brief set on Nov. 19 as a late addition to learning disability charity Mencap's Little Noise Sessions, held at London's Union Chapel, but the Tabernacle show was her full live comeback.

The gig, which benefited the clean water charity Pump Aid, will be followed by some tour dates in the U.S. next month. In the meantime, "The Sea" will be released on Feb. 2, 2010.

50 CENT SETTLES WITH TACO BELL: Parties reach agreement over ad that used rapper's name to plug value menu.

*The legal matter between 50 Cent and Taco Bell ended on Monday when the two parties reached a confidential settlement over a commercial that used the rapper's name to promote the restaurant's value menu.

The rap star, born Curtis Jackson, sued Taco Bell for $1 million dollars in damages over a June 2008 promotion that offered 50 Cent $10,000 to change his name to 79 Cent, 89 Cent or 99 Cent for one day.

50 accused Taco Bell of using his name and likeness without expressed permission and for making him the “star of a nationwide campaign” without his permission.

TIGER WOODS BOOED AT ALMA MATER: It was visiting Cal fans who let loose during golfer's halftime speech at rival Stanford.

*Stanford alum Tiger Woods got an earful of Cal Berkeley boos during Saturday's football game between the two rivals.

Woods, who played for Stanford's golf team, was made honorary captain for the Cardinals during Saturday's matchup. He delivered a quick halftime speech to mark his induction into the Stanford Athletics Hall of Fame.

And that's when the boobirds came out. [Watch video here:

Adding insult to injury, Cal upset then-No. 14 Stanford, 34-28.

NO DRAMA BETWEEN NICOLE MURPHY'S EX AND FIANCÉ: Eddie Murphy and Michael Strahan 'give each other a hug when they see each other.'

*Nicole Murphy swears there are no hard feelings between her ex-husband Eddie Murphy and her current fiancé, former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan.

"They're cool," Murphy, 41, tells People.com of Strahan, 39, and Eddie Murphy, 48, the father of her five children – Bria, 20, Myles, 17, Shayne, 15, Zola, 9, and Bella, 7. "They'll give each other a hug when they see each other."

Strahan - now on FOX as an analyst for "FOX NFL Sunday" and in the comedy "Brothers" - proposed to Nicole in the Bahamas last June and is currently planning for a June 2010 wedding.

"I'm excited," says Murphy, who vowed she would never marry again – until she met Strahan. "I didn't think I would," she says. "I mean, there were good times, and there were some bad times, and [after my divorce] I was thinking, 'Ugh, I don't ever want to get married again.' So when I met somebody that I have everything in common with, who I enjoy being with, it was so refreshing."

"I love the fact that I can act silly in front of Michael," she says, "just sing out loud and do whatever. We'll just laugh at each other. We're comfortable with each other, and we have a lot in common."

Nicole says she's planning a small beach ceremony that will incorporate all nine of her children – her five, and Strahan’s four – into the wedding party.

"It's my second time around, and I had the big extravagant wedding when I got married to Eddie. I want to do something really simple," she says. "I want the dress to be flowy and elegant, and I'd love all the guests to wear cream, and no shoes on the beach.

And will the happy couple be looking to add to their family?

"No way!" Murphy tells People. "I'm waiting for grandbabies now."

The HHHOF has two arms, The non-profit HHHOF Museum Foundation, which will oversee the museum, exhibits, and community outreach with "pioneers" of rap, and the for-profit HHHOF Global Media Group which will operate the restaurant, retail gift shop, concert lounge, TV studios, co-branded entertainment divisions, merchandising, special events, and corporate partnerships.

The Advisory Board members include rap legends Grandmaster Caz of the Cold Crush Bros, Rock Hall inductee Melle Mel, Kurtis Blow, Pebblee Poo, L.A. Sunshine and Kool Herc.

In a statement, HHHOF said it will provide 300 jobs, internships, co-branded marketing opportunities, as well as educational events and outreach programs for the youth and families. The economic impact in the City of New York is expected to be over $350 million over five years, from on-site and off-site programming, tourism, B2B local commerce, consumer spending, and city tax revenues.

The HHHOF "Hip Hop-A-Thon" campaign kicks off with the launch of HIPHOPHOF.COM, the official fan, artist, and industry social networking website and magazine set to go live on Dec. 4. TIME EXAMINES 'POLITICS OF PERCEIVING SKIN COLOR': Article highlights research that shows political views can skew skin color perception.

*Time magazine's Tiffany Sharples O'Callaghan writes about a new study that sets out to determine whether political views can skew skin color perception.

To put it simply, research published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that people who disagreed with President Obama's views tended to believe he is darker skinned than he actually is, while his supporters thought he was lighter skinned.

O'Callaghan says the study included three experiments:

In all three, participants viewed photographs of either President Obama or a fictional biracial politician. In some of the photographs, the candidate's skin tone was darkened or lightened, while others were left untouched. Study participants, who were also polled about their political views, were shown the various photographs. In the first experiment, where an unknown candidate was used, participants were made to believe that he either shared or opposed their views.

In the second two experiments, images of Barack Obama from the 2008 presidential campaign were shown to participants. In all three cases, people who agreed with the politician's views were more likely to pick lighter-skinned images of him; people who disagreed were more likely to pick darker-skinned images.

The studies were conducted by Eugene Caruso from the University of Chicago's business school, in collaboration with Nicole Mead from the Tilburg Institute for Behavioral Economics Research at the Netherlands'
Tilburg University, and Emily Balcetis, in the psychology department at New York University.

For the two experiments that used photographs of President Obama, there were not enough African American participants to accurately assess whether there were any major differences in perception between black and white participants (10% or fewer of the subjects were African American in both trials), but for the first experiment, which had a broader subject pool, researchers say that demographics had no bearing on the influence of political bias. They write: "[P]articipants completed a number of demographic measures, none of which had a significant effect..."

While other factors may not have had much influence, when it came to biracial candidates at least, political views were strongly correlated with bias. In one study, participants were also shown photographs of John McCain.
No bias toward lighter or darker skin tone in images of the former presidential candidate was evident, regardless of participants' politics. Yet when examining images of candidates of mixed ethnic backgrounds, bias was plain.

"Across the three studies reported here," the researchers write, "we found that partisans not only 'darken' those with whom they disagree, but also 'lighten' those with whom they agree." The findings suggest that race bias is very much alive and well in the U.S., and more ingrained than we might like to believe.

EUR FILM REVIEW: Uncertainty
Alternative Tales Unfold Following Flip of a Coin on Brooklyn Bridge
Film Review by Kam Williams

*Kate (Lynn Collins) and Bobby (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a carefree young couple living in NYC, are weighing their options about how to spend 4th of July as they walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.

On the one hand, they could attend her tight-knit, Argentinian family's picnic, although that would probably involve dealing with pressure from her parents to settle down and get married.

On the other hand, they could simply saunter into Manhattan for whatever serendipitous adventure might lay in wait.

The lovebirds impulsively agree to base their decision on a fateful flip of the coin, blissfully unaware of just how much is riding on its landing head versus tails. For, while the duty-bound barbecue will basically be an uneventful, if socially-awkward, annoyance, a day in the city will morph into a harrowing, never-ending nightmare.

And how do we know this? Because Uncertainty is a bifurcated drama depicting exactly what will transpire, depending on which direction Kate and Bobby take off the bridge. The picture was co-written and co-directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, the same brains behind The Deep End (2001), an equally-compelling whodunit starring Tilda Swinton.

To make it easy for the audience to keep the two strands straight, one story features the protagonists wearing yellow and heading into Chinatown, the other, wearing green and going to Kate's folks' place in Brooklyn. There's no reason to reveal the details of the family picnic at all, because it essentially serves as mundane counterpoint to the riveting alternative.

Meanwhile, the plot of the former thickens right off the bat when they find a cell phone left behind on the seat of their taxicab by the previous passenger. The desperate owner calls to retrieve it, and Bobby unwittingly arranges a meeting in a nearby Chinese restaurant.

But the guy happens to have mob connections and is shot dead on the street just as he's approaching the place. Suddenly, instead of a leisurely lunch, Bobby and Kate find themselves on the run with a gangster in hot pursuit. Soon, they're hopelessly embroiled in a high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse with a shadowy figure offering as much as a half-million dollars for the phone when he's not threatening to kill them.

      A brilliantly-conceived, well-executed, micro-budgeted, action-packed thriller which gives a whole new meaning to 4th of July fireworks.

EARNEST PUGH: Artist celebrates birthday in the nation’s capital.

*Since the July release of Earnest Pugh’s latest CD "Earnest Pugh LIVE: Rain on U," Pugh has been busy on the promotion trail. But last weekend he joined a host of fellow artists and friends in the Washington, D.C. area to celebrate his birthday.

Recently interviewed in Jet and Sister 2 Sister magazines, Pugh’s latest disk features Vanessa Bell Armstrong and Richard Smallwood and debuted at #2 on Billboard. The single "Rain on Us" just recently broke into the Top Ten at Radio and is still rising.

Future events for Pugh include the Gospel Super Fest in Cincinnati; the NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles, where he is nominated in two categories; and the Gospel Music Channel's award ceremony in Atlanta, where he is nominated for "Praise and Worship Video of the Year." Pugh’s "Ask for the Rain Tour" will start in spring 2010.

CHURCH GAS LEAK: Youth choir members hospitalized.

*A carbon monoxide leak sent 30 children and teenagers to area hospitals after they got sick during a church choir rehearsal in Des Moines, Iowa. According to a Chicago Tribune report, a generator used during church functions caused the sickness during a three-hour choir practice.

Hospital officials said everyone was treated and released with no long-lasting effects from the gas. Des Moines police said the building has been ventilated and should cause no further incidents.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness and other symptoms. Inhaling high levels can cause death.

MINISTER ARRESTED: Attempted rape among charges filed.

*A youth minister in Coral Springs, Florida has been arrested and charged with child molestation. According to the Sun Sentinel, police charged Russell Dion Lewis, 28, with custodial battery and 10 counts of lewd and lascivious molestation. Lewis was held Sunday in the Broward County jail on $20,000 bond.

Lewis also was fired from his position as assistant music and youth minister. David Hughes, senior pastor at Church by the Glades in Coral Springs, spoke from the pulpit last Sunday about the arrest.

``A kid cannot give consent. We are all about forgiving,' Hughes told the congregation. ``But when it comes to our children, we're pretty hard-nosed around here.'

There’s no word on whether Lewis has claimed innocence or guilt. Lewis was hired about two years ago when he moved to Florida from Hobbs, N.M.

STUDENTS WITH NO RELIGION: Atheist groups growing on campus.

*More studies show a growing number of college students have no religious affiliation. And that’s making way for students to promote atheism through what they call a Godless campus crusade.

In existence for ten years, members of the Atheist and Agnostic Society at Iowa State University say they want to raise the profile of religious skepticism among the student body.

"A lot of people on campus either don't know we exist or are afraid of us or hate us," Alex Bodnar said in an interview, adding that "People assume we're rabble-rousing, when we're one of the gentlest groups on campus." Bodnar is president of the ISU Atheist and Agnostic Society.

According to a recent study, Campus affiliates of the Secular Student Alliance have multiplied from 80 in 2007 to 100 in 2008 and 174 this fall, providing the atheist movement new training grounds for future leaders. In another sign of growing acceptance, at least three universities, including Harvard, now have humanist chaplains meeting the needs of the not-so-spiritual. With the growth has come soul-searching — or the atheist equivalent — about what secular campus groups should look like.

HATE CRIMES ON THE RISE: Bad economy could lead to bad behavior.

*The number of crimes against black people and members of religious groups increased in 2008, making up a growing share of incidents motivated by bias against a person’s race, religion and sexual preference, the FBI revealed in a USA Today report. Those categories accounted for 56% of the 7,783 hate crimes reported in 2008. Overall, hate crimes increased 2% from 2007. The number of attacks on blacks increased 8% to 2,876, accounting for seven of every 10 race-motivated crimes.

The election of the first black president and hot-button issues such as abortion and gay marriage contributed to the spikes, anti-bias groups say.

"There is this kind of extremism going on," says Hilary Shelton, director of the NAACP Washington bureau. He said President Barack Obama's election and the recession led to a backlash against blacks as some people look for someone to blame for hard economic times.

Hate crimes based on sexual orientation increased 3% to 1,297,although the number of people victimized went up 13% to 1,706. Geo Vaughn, 23, of Queens, N.Y, said lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender people are more vulnerable now because they are increasingly in the public eye in the debate over equal rights, including a California vote that overturned a new law allowing same-sex marriage.

EUR MOTIVATIONAL NOTE

Today’s ‘Live Better With Willie Jolley’ Tip: Growth Is Painful, But Necessary

Most people don’t live life to the fullest because they have fear. They let fear rob them of life and the joys of living. I don’t want you to be reckless and foolish, but I do want you to take chances and challenge yourself. If you’re afraid to take some risks, you will never grow, never stretch and never reach your potential. Sometimes it may be painful, but there is no growth without pain. That’s why they’re called "growing pains."

What would you think if you had a baby who was three years old and had not grown from infancy? You’d take the baby to the doctor. Or suppose the baby fell down once and just stopped trying to walk? You’d know there was something wrong because you know that without falling and getting back up, the baby would never learn to walk.

We cannot stop trying just because we fall or just because it is painful.
Growth is painful, but it is necessary. This is a direct quote from the families of the astronauts who died in the tragic Challenger shuttle
disaster: ‘‘Do not fear risk; all exploration, all growth is calculated.
Life is filled with challenge. Only those who are willing to go after those challenges grow. Only if we are willing to walk over the edge can we become winners.’’

Remember, all things are possible if you can just believe.
