EUR ON THE SCENE: Annual Leimert Park Tree Lighting(December 18, 2009)
*Los Angeles-Several days after Black Friday, and on the day of Cyber Monday, tree lighting ceremonies where held all across Southern California during the first week of December.
The annual Leimert Park Tree Lighting Ceremony takes the prize for having the largest tree. On a nice Monday evening, Councilmember Bernard C. Parks, 8th District and the community gathered in Leimert Park Village recently to light the huge tree so prominently on display in Leimert Park Village. Adai Lamar KJLH 102.3 Radio Personality served as Mistress of Ceremony for the occasion. Christine Dixon, Director, Council District 8 welcomed the large crowd to Leimert Park and to this wonderful occasion. Honorable Councilmember Bernard C. Parks, 8th District also welcomed the crowd and mentioned why he and his wife thought that it was a marvelous idea to have a tree lighting ceremony in our community. Council member Parks also introduced the special guest in the audience and thanked everyone who helped to make this outstanding event possible. There were a lot of community groups on hand to entertain the crowd while waiting for the official tree lighting. The program kicked off with the booming sounds of the KIPP Academy Drum line that performed several tunes. The night belongs to the youngsters as several talented groups performed for the crowd. Leimert Park Chargers Cheerleaders (Jr. clinic, Pee Wee and Jr. midgets), Hip Hype Kids dance performance team, Greater Crenshaw Bears, Lula Washington Dance Theater (several dance troupe of various ages). A break in the entertainment came so that Councilmember Bernard C. Parks, Commissioner Bobbie Parks, Santa Claus and other special guest to light the giant tree on display in Leimert Park Village. You probably saw this on Channel 4 or Channel 9 news before you retired for the evening. The live entertainment continued on the Main Stage with performances by Mercedes Robinson York performing songs of the season. Vocalist Markees Williams performed gospel music. The Leimert Park Drum Alliance consisted of several combined groups jamming on the main stage. The program concluded with several additional top notched artists/groups Frenchie Davis, Audra Bryant and roof raising performances of Kingdom Worship Choir and the Crenshaw High School Choir. Everyone agreed that this annual celebration is a great way to kicked off the Holiday season. # # #
