SUPER PRODUCER The Making Of *Though well known worldwide, Sean "P. Diddy" Combs can certainly be called a super producer. The man has hundreds of hits under his belt ranging form hip-hop to R&B to pop. He himself is a top-selling artist, and had been crowned by many, including himself, as the King of the Remix. As a matter of fact, his latest CD is title "We Invented the Remix," and debuted at #1 when released late May. Now P. Diddy is moving into new territory. The hot producer and label head recently announced his departure from Arista Records. The Arista giant has distributed P's label, Bad Boy, for nine years, but P. says it's time for him to grow. And Combs vows to make room. "I went to L.A. Reid and told him that I would like to grow into a major," Combs says about his meeting with Arista head Antonio L.A. Reid. "'I would like to be the next major. I want to become one of the next super-powers and I can't do that as a boutique label in a partnership with Arista. I want my freedom, and I don't want to renew my contract. I don't want any hard feelings.' We came to a great agreement to stay in business with a couple of acts." The total details haven't been released, but P. Diddy left the Arista fold with his entire catalog, sort of. He told the EUR that Arista does hang on to a bit of the Bad Boy roster. "They're keeping like 20% of my acts," he confides, "but they're not keeping them on their own - we'll still be in a partnership together. It's hard for people to understand. It's not like I'm walking away. There is still a Bad Boy/Arista with Faith and Carl Thomas and Dream on it. But where I'm going, I'm taking myself, G Dep, and all my rap acts." What's up for the super producer? Surely, more hits, but in the meantime, P. is perusing scripts. You may have caught his big screen debut in a little film called "Monster's Ball." "I'm trying to be an actor, so I want to take real actor roles. No matter if I gotta work for free or do whatever. I wanna do things that you have to dig deep. Right now I'm negotiating some more films," he says. Well, P. Diddy's lead crooner Carl Thomas may still be shared with Arista, but the singer's new CD will be ruled by an up-and -coming producer by the name of Andre Harris. Harris produced most of fellow Philly native Jill Scott's album, Musiq's hit single "Love," Glenn Lewis' Album, "World Outside My Window," the new Carl Thomas project, and the Michael Jackson ballad "Butterflies." Whoa, a gig with the King of Pop? Where has this guy been hiding? "I'm just pretty low-key, just trying to get work done," admits the self-proclaimed behind-the-scenes kind of guy. "I don't get out too much, but I'm trying to get out now." Harris doesn't have to go too far for talent, though. The producer says that his homebase of Philadelphia has a bevy of talented artists. With artists like Jill Scott, Musiq coming out of the City of Brotherly Love there's no doubt about it. "It's been boiling for awhile," Harris says about the re-emergence of the Philly sound. "There's so much talent and so much going on in Philly, it was just liable to happen." But it's not just about the new neo-soul, he contends. "It's well rounded. Me and my partner have been working with Justin Timberlake, Hootie & The Blowfish, ya know, all different kinds of acts. We've had a lot of artists come to Philly to work with us. And the rap scene is pretty popping, too." Sounds like what's poppin' is Andre Harris. Watch out, Diddy. -- Kenya Yarbrough ///advert---advert---advert//// "I believe in heaven and hell, but I don't know where I dwell." TO SUMMER JAM Rapper leaves Hot 97 concert and vents at rival station. *Nas is definitely a battle rapper. And this time he's taking on more than another MC, he's taken on a whole radio station. The rapper was scheduled to perform at New York's Hot 97 Summer Jam last week, but left the stage after he was told by the station that he couldn't poke fun at Jay-Z. Nas promptly headed over to cross-town rival Power 105 to vent. Nas complained, for several hours, mind you, that last year, Hot 97 allowed Jay to do whatever he wanted. Hot 97, however says they never told the rapper he couldn't "say" anything against Jay-Z, but that he couldn't use his stage props - which included gallows featuring a lynched Jay-Z. The station called the stage set "objectionable" and felt it could spark violence at the concert. "We told Nas months ago he could say anything on mic, but no videos or props," Hot 97 program director Tracy Cloherty told the New York Post. "His people agreed. Then, two hours before the show, they brought a 12-foot gallows on the stage. We have a lot of love for Nas, but we had 16,000 people out there and a lot of kids. There wasn't going to be a lynching on our stage." SHARPTON AND COCHRAN HEAD SUMMIT Music Industry Initiative Summit set to kick off soon. *The Rev. Al Sharpton and attorney Johnnie Cochran will soon launch the first ever summit under their newly formed recording artists initiative, which falls under Sharpton's civil liberties organization, the National Action Network. The two are heading up the Music Industry Initiative Summit, which will be held the week of July 8 in Los Angeles and July 11 in New York. The two community activists are calling "artists around the country" to attend one of the meetings. Michael Jackson has already jumped aboard, saying he will join the organization. Jackson recently announced he would sever ties to his current label, Epic Records, under Sony Music, due to what he considers the unfair practices of label head Tommy Mottola. SMITH SPEAKS, OUT OF THE HOARSEST MOUTH Actor's rap side gets the best of him. *Will Smith is getting ready to become bigger than life again when his new film, "Men In Black II," hits screens this Wednesday. But recently the actor's voice hasn't been very big. At a press junket promoting the new film, Smith's voice was particularly hoarse, according to a TV Guide report. The actor says it was because he was still recovering from performing the "MIB" soundtrack hit, "Black Suits Coming," for the "Today" show's summer concert series. "Outside performances are always tough," he told TV Guide Online. "You always end up pushing too much to make sure you're projected." /////////////////////////////////////// Who defines what a beautiful, black woman is? LASALLE PROJECT DEBUTS Film shows at American Black Film Fest. *Former "ER" star Eriq LaSalle joined in on the celebration at the American Black Film Festival, and he told People why he decided to leave the award winning series. "I always said I left 'ER' to pursue film making, and here it comes." That's right. LaSalle has just directed, produced, and starred in the thriller "Crazy As Hell," which competed in this past weekend's fest. The film stars Michael Beach, and has been described as "twisted and edgy." It will be released in selected theaters in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Atlanta and Washington in September, and then heads to video. ////Full Figure Fashion @ Essence.com//// Once upon a time, the only way a stylish, full-bodied sister could rock the latest trends was to commission a custom-made wardrobe. They are Baby Pun (8), Ray Ray (8), and Lil' James (12), and are scheduled to release their debut album on Interscope Records. Hey, they already have the hookup. Hope they have the talent! BANDERAS PLAYS "HIMSELF" Antonio takes on role of revolutionary. *Spanish actor Antonio Banderas has accepted the role of fabled Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa for the upcoming HBO film, "Pancho Villa As Himself." The film will begin shooting this fall and is based on the real-life Mexican "hero" and his dealings with pioneer filmmaker D.W. Griffith. Villa is said to have allowed Griffith to film during battles in the early 1900s, creating Hollywood's first action movies. Griffith directed the first motion picture, the controversial "Birth of a Nation." Instead he will be hosting a late-night show called "Jerry Springer Saturday Night" on South African TV. Unlike his stateside show, Springer says that the new show will be more "traditional." "This is a traditional show," the 58-year-old talk-show host told People. "This is meeting fascinating people with a particular talent. The idea of being in South Africa is exciting," he continued. "There's a great romance to this place, politically, socially, geographically. It's too good a deal to pass up." Already hosting a similar late-night show in England, Springer has no plans to branch out into any more countries. He's keeping busy now hosting three shows, shooting an upcoming film and recording his first music album. ITTY BITTY BITS Fox gets over, OutKast doubles over, Jill Scott over achieves. **Vivica A. Educators propose, changes or else. *Remember those analogies on the SAT? Those match statements that would read: “gullible is to dupe … as submissive is to control?” It may be too late for most of us, but up-and-coming students won’t have that verbal section to worry about. According to the Chicago Tribune, the College Board wants to alter the SAT exam, which is the college entrance exam used most often in the US. The changes are partly in response to the number of critics who consider the test biased against minorities, immigrants and poor students, and toward wealthy students who can afford test coaching. One of the changes will be the omission of the analogies and the addition of a third year of high school math - math being considered much more universal. Currently, educators are divided about changes on the test, but others, like the University of California President Richard Atkinson proposed eliminating the use of the SAT for admissions totally. UC faculty and administrators say the changes are a step in the right direction. With California being the biggest SAT client, with almost 165,000 students taking the test in 2001, it would be in the test maker’s best interest. "Everybody is always mystified as to how on earth a standardized test can be biased, but it absolutely can, on a number of different levels," said Melissa Hendrix, executive director and assistant vice president of the Chicago office of the Princeton Review test preparation company. The proposals for changes will be voted on by the College Board, which is made up of 31 guidance counselors, college administrators and educators. If passed, the changes would go into effect by March 2005. ******* ADVERTISING IN THE EUR WORKS! ******* For more info visit: http://www.eurweb.com/information/advertise.cfm or send e-mail to: sales@eurweb.com EUR MOTIVATIONAL NOTE: Success TIP of the Day: "Break The Law … Murphy's Law!" She is entitled to speak her mind on what roles she chooses. She has set standards for the roles she has taken and has stood by them. She does not have to hate on Halle. At one time Halle felt the same way about how black women are portrayed. I guess she changed her mind. But, she is entitled to EXPOSE herself to Hollywood any way that suits her. Mr. Daniels is in the wrong business if he can't handle criticism about his works. She wasn't calling the film bad, so lighten up! In Hollywood you need to have thick skin. He knows the stereotypes are still there when it comes to black women in Hollywood. So he shouldn't front just because his film made bucks. I had not heard Hollywood praise Halle's beauty to this degree until she bared her body. Go figure!" *Robin, Cleveland, OH: "Why are we villifying Angela Bassett for what was essentially a truthful statement that was not intended to be taken personally? I never read an insult to Halle Berry or the prducers of 'Monster's Ball' inherent in that text. Interestingly enough, Bassett echoed what most people thought or said aloud after the Oscars. You have to wonder why after 70 plus years the Oscar for best actress went to a black woman who was featured in an overtly sexual role. Yeah, the character had greater dimension than usual but ask someone what they remembered most about the film and they will say the sex scene. Nonetheless, there was nothing offensive about Bassett's comments. Still, I am concerned that we seem more focused on a win by any means necessary than the quality of the win." **** ANNOUNCING THE NEW EURweb STORE **** Featuring FREE merchandise.
