Actress Lupita Nyong’o attends 7th Annual ESSENCE Black Women In Hollywood Luncheon February 27, 2014 in Beverly Hills, California.
*Lupita Nyong’o had the audience in tears Thursday while accepting her honor for best breakout performance at Essence magazine’s seventh annual Women in Hollywood luncheon.
The “12 Years a Slave” star and Oscar nominee for best supporting actress revealed that as a young girl, she had wished her dark skin would become lighter.
“I got teased and taunted about my skin,” Nyong’o began, on stage in a ballroom at the Beverly Hills Hotel. “My one prayer to God was that I would wake up lighter skinned. The morning would come and I would be so excited about seeing my new skin that I would refuse to look down at myself until I was in front of the mirror because I wanted to see my face first. Every day I would feel the disappointment of being just as dark as the day before.”
*Yes! Another black female lead coming to TV screens.
Another potential series for Black Twitter to get behind?
Well, maybe — especially since Shonda Rhimes is bringing Viola Davis right along to star as the lead in a new ABC drama, “How to Get Away With Murder.”
Kerry Washington was all smiles at her baby shower at Shonda Rhimes’ home on Feb. 23
*Kerry Washington’s baby shower took place on Sunday (Feb. 23), with approximately 60 friends and relatives — including Jane Fonda, Regina King, and Washington’s “Scandal” costar Darby Stanchfield – gathered at the Hancock Park home of show creator Shonda Rhimes.
Washington is expecting her first child with husband Nnamdi Asomugha this year.
The shower took place under an open-air canopy in Rhimes’ backyard, a source tells Us Weekly. Invitees started arriving at around 11 a.m., at which point they were escorted to the pool area for drinks and appetizers.
*This comes at no surprise!
Kerry Washington leads one of the best shows on TV as the powerful DC fixer Olivia Pope and Nielsen knows where a bulk of the popularity is coming from.
“Scandal” is the most watched show in prime-time TV among black viewers.
It makes sense — since Black Twitter helped in promotion of the show by virally discussing it during each episode.
Actress Kerry Washington is 37 today
*Just like the headline says, this page/board is where you can discuss the stuff that we didn’t cover in today’s issue. (It’s sort of like feedback with a twist) Remember, NO name calling, racial taunting, graphic sex talk and vulgarity in general, PLEASE.
