Aretha Franklin in a scene from the documentary "Amazing Grace"
*Aretha Franklin is trying to block the release of “Amazing Grace,” the documentary film by the late Sydney Pollack on the making of her live gospel album of the same name.
The Warner Bros. film has been sitting unseen for 39 years. Franklin’s attorney Alan Reed intends to seek an injunction preventing the film’s release, according to TMZ. Her camp says that the film’s producer Alan Elliott wants to release it this year and claims the soul diva’s permission is required before the film can be rolled out. [Watch the trailer below.]
No reason has been given for Franklin’s reluctance to have the film released.
The double album, recorded at L.A.’s New Temple Missionary Baptist Church, is Franklin’s biggest selling album and the top selling gospel album of all time. Elliott is an accomplished film and TV composer and music exec, and stepbrother of producer-manager Benny Medina.
*Boy George, who got clean from drug addictions in March of 2008, has a song inspired by the presidential campaign of Barack Obama on his new album “Ordinary Alien,” which was released earlier this month, via download only in the U.S.
The 15-track dance set, co-produced with longtime cohort Kinky Roland, gathers together new recordings of ideas and previous releases that date back as far as 20 years.
In addition to the first single, “Amazing Grace,” the album includes “Yes We Can,” a positivity mantra that samples President Obama’s famous campaign catchphrase.
“I call that my recovery song,” George says, “because I wrote it when I first got clean. I tapped into his sentiment and the whole feeling that was going on while he was campaigning, that kind of feeling of optimism and change, which is something that was happening to me as well.”
