*Filmmaker Tyler Perry recently opened up about his critics and the perceived lack of opportunities for black actresses in Hollywood during an interview with Oprah Winfrey airing tonight (Sunday. 05-26-13) on OWN.
Perry also addressed the criticism of his movies being malt liquor to the masses, as one critic put it, and he also quelled the notion of a conspiracy against black women for roles in major motion pictures and television.
“I don’t think it’s that as much as I think it is the stories that are being told, and the writers that are telling the stories,” he told Oprah. “You’re telling stories from your own experiences and your own life. You write about what you know.”
Perry added, “I don’t know if there is a conspiracy. I just feel like the storytellers are telling stories that don’t don’t include a lot of us. We need more storytellers and more people in power to give the strength to those storytellers to tell those stories.”
Perry also fired back at his detractors,
“I get it. I understand it. But why would I be upset at people who don’t get it?” I have these messages by the millions at how my movies and work have spoken to them and their families. So the ones who don’t get it are not as important to me as the ones who do.”
He continued, “With some of the critics I look for truth. If I can find truth in it, then I’m okay with it. But if its just vicious. If it’s just hating for hating’s sake. If it’s just about them getting hits on their blogs, I have no interest in reading that. But if someone is genuine enough to give a real and true critique to help me grow, then I’m open to that.”
Perry’s and Winfrey’s candid conversation, will premiere tonight (Sunday. 05-26-13) on her network (OWN) at 9pm ET/PT. It will be immediately followed at 10 pm ET/PT by Tyler Perry Comes to OWN: Behind The Scenes, said to be an exclusive inside look at the making of his two new series.
