*Jay Z is in the headlines this morning for comments he made in the new November 2013 issue of Vanity Fair, linking his success in the corporate world to the skills he acquired as a drug dealer.
The hip-hop mogul said he found it easy to set up his Roc Nation record label and build a musical empire because he already had years of experience slinging crack on the streets of Brooklyn.
“I know about budgets. I was a drug dealer. To be in a drug deal, you need to know what you can spend, what you need to re-up,” he told the magazine.
The 43-year-old reformed family man – who has 20-month-old daughter Blue Ivy with his wife Beyonce – wishes he had gotten out of the drug scene earlier and thought about the big picture instead of focusing on the instant cash.
“Not until later [did I have regrets], when I realized the effects on the community,” he said. “I started looking at the community on the whole, but in the beginning, no. I was thinking about surviving. I was thinking about improving my situation. I was thinking about buying clothes.”
The music mogul is reported to have raked in $42 million in the past year, adding to a net worth of about $475 million, a far cry from his original ”exit strategy” of setting up a barbershop.
“If you want to start some sort of barbershop or carwash – those were the businesses back then. Things you can get in easily to get out of [that] life,” he said. “You have to have an exit strategy, because your window [for dealing drugs] is very small. You’re going to get locked up or you’re going to die.”
*The woman who lived with Lamar Odom for six weeks in June and July tells TMZ that the NBA player was doing crack in her apartment.
Polina Polonsky, a criminal defense lawyer who met Lamar in the Spring at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, told TMZ Live he was smoking crack and doing other drugs while he stayed with her, but she says things really spun out-of-control when he moved out.
Polina says Lamar became paranoid while he lived with her, taking the battery out of his phone because he felt he was being followed with the aid of a GPS device. He also covered the smoke detectors with paper towels.
Polina says his wife Khloe Kardashian came banging on the door in July, barged in, took charge and took Lamar out. She received a text from Lamar shortly after he left, calling her a “groupie, junkie … crack head.” She says she knows it wasn’t Lamar who sent the text … it was Khloe.
Polina’s response was, “Stay in your lane.” He shot back, “4real. Know where u work. U live. Ur parents.”
Khloe reportedly knew Lamar had a substance abuse issue for years, but the “crack” texts clued her in to his issue with that specific drug.
Before Lamar’s crack addiction surfaced publicly, he had been accused of having affairs with Polina and Jennifer Richardson.
*TMZ is reporting that Lamar Odom was deep into drugs while he was playing for the Dallas Mavericks and there is evidence he was doing the exact same thing while playing for the Lakers.
Sources connected to a Westin hotel in Memphis tell TMZ that in March of 2012, shortly before Lamar was cut from the Mavs, he stayed in one of the guest rooms while his team was in town playing the Grizzlies.
Sources say when Lamar left, hotel employees found major carpet damage, including quarter-sized burn marks. The damage was so bad, the hotel had to replace the carpeting in the room.
Hotel employees also found white powder on the desk blotter and the room reeked of noxious smoke, according to TMZ’s sources, adding it was obvious there was serious drug use going on in the hotel room.
The Westin is one of numerous hotels where NBA players stay when they’re on the road. TMZ has contacted a number of them around the country and learned from several hotel employees that they had complained about the state of the rooms when Lamar left — similar to what happened in Memphis — and this was while he was playing for the Lakers.
Sources say no one on the Mavs knew Lamar was on drugs while he was on the team, but everyone knew something was seriously wrong with him. During at least part of the time he was playing for the Mavs, Lamar was smoking Oxycontin and cocaine, TMZ’s sources claim.
Odom’s problems were so severe, he was cut from the Mavs mid-season and paid in full just so he would go away.
According to TMZ, Odom’s drug use escalated to crack, “and we’re told Lamar’s level of crack use is now alarming and life-threatening,” the website stated.
*As the sports drama world turns, former MLB star Otis Nixon was arrested over the weekend after being caught with a crack pipe and some crack rocks inside his car. Immediately pinning the possession on his son, he still went to jail.
According to TMZ, the 54-year-old was pulled over in Atlanta after there were reports of a reckless driver.
When Nixon was searched, police say they found drugs in his pants pocket and what appeared to be crack rock on his driver’s seat.
Authorities say they also found another stash of crack and a pipe in the floor board of the driver’s side.
Though he tried to finagle his way out of the situation by claiming the substances were his son’s, police conducted a sobriety test and determined that he was not under the influence.
*Here we go again with another scandalous story out of Detroit.
We have no idea why they have so many stories making national news…well, ok, maybe this one.
Mr. C’s Tire Shop on Mack Avenue on the eastside of Detroit has given up the reasoning behind the “C” in their name.
We thought there was an upstanding guy behind the name Mr. C, but it turns out that the “word on the street” was that the C stands for crack!
According to local NBC affiliate channel 4, it was well known that “Mr. Crack” was hiring employees and paying them with crack.
James Parham is accused of pimping and selling crack in his senior living apartment in Englewood Senior Housing in New Jersey.
*The police always report from heinous crime scenes saying things like, “In my 35 years on the force, I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Well, this time, we believe them.
James Parham, 75, has been accused of providing crack and prostitutes to the elderly residents of the New Jersey Englewood Senior Living home.
In other words, Parham is a pimp! He had a little help from fellow resident and neighbor Cheryl Chaney, 66, according to local NBC affiliate channel 4.
