Actor Idris Elba attends the “Les Miserables” World Premiere at the Odeon Leicester Square on December 5, 2012 in London
*Idris Elba says he’s taking a break from acting this year so he can focus his full attention on his other love, music.
The British actor, who DJs under the name Driis, is currently in the middle of a seven-week residency at a London nightclub.
He told Britain’s Daily Mirror, “This year I’m not going to work as an actor so I can concentrate on music. I do it from the heart, not for the money.”
The star of BBC America’s “Luther” has also directed a video for Grammy-winning folk rockers Mumford & Sons.
DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian have been taken off the air after nurse Jacintha Saldanha (center) was found dead in her apartment in an apparent suicide Friday, December 7, 2012.
*Judging from the comments on our previous story about the prank call to Kate Middleton’s room from two Australian DJs, most of you know that the nurse that transferred the call, committed suicide.
There’s no concrete evidence that the tragedy is associated with the prank call, but it is the assumption thus far.
According to ABC’s Good Morning America and Yahoo! News, DJs, Mel Greig and Michael Christian, have been pulled off the air “until further notice.”
The radio station left this statement on their Facebook page in regards to nurse Jacintha Saldanha’s death
2Day FM hosts Mel Greig and Michael Christian successfully pranked the hospital staff where Kate Middleton was being treated for severe morning sickness.
*Nephew Tommy and Rickey Smiley have been the reigning kings of prank calls, but they have been usurped by a couple of knucklehead DJ’s down under.
Two Australian radio hosts may have gotten hospital staff members at the King Edward VII’s Hospital Sister Agnes in London staff fired. The dynamic duo, hosts Mel Greig and Michael Christian, at Sydney’s 2Day FM made a prank call to the hospital to see if they could get any information on Prince William’s bride, Kate Middleton’s condition…and were allowed access to her nursing staff, according to Time magazine.
As the whole world knows by now, the duchess is pregnant and struggling with a rare violent version of morning sickness called hyperemesis gravidarum. During the two-minute conversation Greig and Christian posed as the Queen of England and Prince Charles (This is too funny.).
*Simon Cowell is partnering with Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith for a new reality competition series searching for the world’s best DJ.
Cowell’s SYCO Entertainment is partnering with the couple’s Overbrook Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television to launch the format, which is expected to be shopped internationally and domestically, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“DJ’s are the new rock stars, it feels like the right time to make this show,” Cowell said in a statement announcing the news.
Cowell tweeted about the as yet untitled DJ show Wednesday, clarifying his role in the potential series.
“Excited to announce new DJ show. I will NOT be judging this show. Excited to be working with @jadapsmith. Stay tuned!” he tweeted.
*In Hollywood circles, Connor Cruise, Tom Cruise’s adopted son, is known as DJ C Squared.
That’s because the 16-year-old, who lives with “Mission Impossible” star Tom Cruise and his wife Katie Holmes, is making quite a name for himself as an in-demand DJ in Hollywood.
DJ C Squared will be hitting the turntables on New Year’s Eve as the official DJ at Hollywood’s Big Bang party, according to the New York Post.
Connor is known for DJ’ing at numerous charitable and celebrity events, such as the XBOX Miracle of Music Benefit in honor of the 2011 American Music Awards and Nickelodeon’s 2011 Teen Nick HALO Awards.
You may recognize Connor from a few movies, such as “Seven Pounds” and “Red Dawn,” but it looks as if the teen’s interest lies in music. He’s even started his own business, CZ Entertainment.
As for his dj’ing duties, Cruise makes a pretty penny pulling in about $10,000 per gig.
*Beat-boxing rapper, Biz Markie DJed an unorthodox event for Hip Hop artists — a Docker’s party. He helped invited guests celebrate and showcase the men’s apparel maker’s Fall 2011 collection at Tribeca’s Hudson & Broad showroom in NYC.
There’s not much Markie to say to justify the booking, but in an attempt to explain, he told the Wall Street Journal, “Well, somebody contacted me and, you know, I like Dockers. I wear Dockers. They’re comfortable. I’m a comfortable man … Dockers is a mature jean. You can wear it anywhere. Plus, I just love Dockers.”
Despite the rapper being known for his fat gold chains and exuberant rapping style, the company claims to have tapped the “Just a Friend” artist to “update its image with more modern fits and styles.”
“Biz Markie is a classic,” said a rep for Dockers. “He’s a good representation of an Alpha male who embraces passion, a certain attitude and individualism. He fits well with the new Dockers Alpha khaki that’s launching for Fall 2011 — classic, versatile and the first of its kind.”
