Rihanna’s mother, Monica Braithwaite, presented her the first ever AMA Icon Award
*Broadcast on ABC, the American Music Awards were held Sunday night, and one of the highlights was Rihanna being accorded the first-ever Icon Award.
The Bajan beauty also showed why she was deserving of the award with a show-stopping performance of her song “Diamonds.”
Rihanna performed the song … with her hair pinned back in 1920s style … while belting out the tune with dramatic flair.
After RiRi finished “Diamonds” she was presented the Icon Award by her mother Monica Braithwaite, who was quite emotional.
“Rihanna, I’m so proud of you tonight,” Mrs. Braithwaite said. “I know the journey in your career has not always been an easy one, but tonight I applaud you and admire you for being so strong and so positive and so humble and so focused.”
She continued: “It’s amazing how you always manage to take good from all your experiences. I’m so blessed to be a part of this historic moment. I just want to say how proud I am to present to you the first-ever AMA Icon Award.”
Meanwhile, as far as other winners are concerned, Taylor Swift earned top honors, winning artist of the year in the fan-voted event. She beat out fellow nominees Macklemore & Lewis, Rihanna, Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake.
Justin Timberlake performs ‘Drink You Away’ with the Tennessee Kids at 2013 AMAs
Speaking of Justin Timberlake, he won favorite pop/rock male as well as favorite soul/R&B male artist and favorite soul/R&B album. Knowing that he’s bound to spark controversy by winning the those last two awards, he made a point to say, “These are voted on by the fans – everyone who took to their Twitter … and got busy, this means so much to me, thank you.”
Another controversial win, as far as we’re concerned, came with the announcement that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis won the favorite rap/hip-hop album award. They accepted the award via live satellite from Miami. Interestingly, during their acceptance speech, they brought up racial profiling and cited the Trayvon Martin case. Macklemore, whose real name is Ben Haggarty, told the audience at the Nokia Theater in Downtown LA and Viewers:
“Due to the fact that we are in Florida tonight accepting this award I want to acknowledge Trayvon Martin and the hundreds and hundreds of kids each year that are dying due to racial profiling and the violence that follows it. This is really happening. These are our friends, our neighbors, our peers and our fans, and it’s time that we look out for the youth and fight against racism and the laws that protect it.”
They later did a performance live from Miami, which was broadcast on the show.
