*“12 Years a Slave” will be released on Digital HD on Feb. 18 and on DVD and Blu-ray on March 4 — two days after the 86th Academy Awards – and accompanied in those formats by several educational extras, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
THR posted a teaser of one of them: “A Historical Portrait,” a documentary about how the film came together and the book that inspired it, featuring readings from the latter by the star of the former, Chiwetel Ejiofor. [Scroll down to watch a teaser.]
The special feature will appear solely on the film’s Blu-ray edition.
*BIM Distribuzione has officially apologized for putting the white stars of “12 Years a Slave” (Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender) ahead of the film’s real topliner Chiwetel Ejiofor in posters throughout Italy.
On Tuesday, Summit Entertainment and Lionsgate announced that BIM Distribuzione’s racially-amended posters were unauthorized.
Yesterday (Dec. 26), the Italian distributor issued the following statement:
*Lionsgate is in damage control following its Italian distribution of “12 Years a Slave” that featured separate images of white actors Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender (who had small roles in the pic) prominently over a much smaller image of the film’s main star, black actor Chiwetel Ejiofor.
As previously reported, Italy-based blogger Carefree Black Girl initially posted concerns about the posters, which in turn went viral.
*Even though Brad Pitt has a small role in “12 Years A Slave,” as the Canadian man who helps obtain the release of the film’s central character, Solomon Northrup – played by Chiwetel Ejiofor – the poster used in the marketing of the film in Italy would have you to believe otherwise.
As you can see, the Italian “12 Years A Slave” poster makes Pitt, who’s also a producer of the film, the focal point, with Ejiofor relegated to secondary status in the lower portion of the artwork.
Yes, we know. All we can do is shake our head and wonder how in the hell can this be happening in 2013. If this isn’t a slap in the face we don’t know what else it could possibly be when you consider that Ejiofor was nominated for a Golden Globe for his incredible performance in the film.
