According to the AP, rising Democratic star Cory Booker has won a special election to represent New Jersey in the U.S. Senate.
The Newark mayor defeated Republican Steve Lonegan in an abbreviated campaign of stark policy and style differences.
Booker will become the first black senator from New Jersey. He is filling the seat left vacant by the death of Sen. Frank Lautenberg.
Booker has built a national following for his consensus-building and his personal story. He was a suburbanite who went to Stanford and Yale Law before moving into a tough Newark neighborhood promising to do good before he ran for office. He’s also been a pioneering politician on Twitter.
Lonegan is a conservative former mayor of the town of Bogota. He dismissed Booker as more connected to Hollywood and the Silicon Valley than New Jersey.

Shawn Custis, 42, is allegedly, the animal that attacked the woman whose identity has been withheld by law enforcement. Police caught Custis Friday, June 28, in an apartment building in Inwood, Manhattan, without incident.
He is being held in an undisclosed location and hopefully being treated the same way he treated his victim.

One woman endured a brutal and senseless attack in front of her 3-year-old child when a man broke into her home while they were sitting together watching cartoons, Friday, June 21, according to the New York Daily News.
The man immediately began punching the woman in her face, kicking in her face after returning from her upstairs, and all in front of her child, who he did not acknowledge in any way.
The woman also had an 18-month-old child sleeping upstairs, who she probably feared he would harm, but he did not. Police reported that the perpetrator robbed the woman for an “undetermined amount of jewelry” and
James Parham is accused of pimping and selling crack in his senior living apartment in Englewood Senior Housing in New Jersey.
*The police always report from heinous crime scenes saying things like, “In my 35 years on the force, I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Well, this time, we believe them.
James Parham, 75, has been accused of providing crack and prostitutes to the elderly residents of the New Jersey Englewood Senior Living home.
In other words, Parham is a pimp! He had a little help from fellow resident and neighbor Cheryl Chaney, 66, according to local NBC affiliate channel 4.

*Newark native and former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal visited Governor Chris Christie at the New Jersey Statehouse Friday, and the two men posed for the above photo.
Christie posted the picture to his Twitter account shortly after O’Neal left, saying “you know it’s a fun day in Trenton when Shaq stops by for a visit.”
According to New Jersey news site the Daily Record, O’Neal was there to talk about getting involved in the state’s gun buyback program. Christie reportedly said O’Neal “had good ideas” and plans to “do something with him.”
