*Earlier we told you about the reboot of “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey” hosted by astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson.
Well, we just found out that President Obama will help with the launch of the show with a video message at the beginning of the broadcast which is happening tonight, Sunday at 9/8c on Fox and other Fox Networks Group channels including National Geographic, FX and Nat Geo Mundo.
The president, according to a release, will be inviting “a new generation to embrace the spirit of discovery and inspires viewers to explore new frontiers and imagine limitless possibilities for the future.”
*Let’s name some names.
The Democrats voting not to confirm Debo Adegbile to head the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division were Sens. Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Joe Manchin (W.Va.), Mark Pryor (Ark.), John Walsh (Mont.), Joe Donnelly (Ind.), Bob Casey (Pa.) and Chris Coons (Del.).
Here’s what they have in common. They disgraced themselves, their party, and most importantly the bedrock Constitutional principle that a defendant, that’s all defendants no matter how putrid some consider them and the crimes they’re charged with to be, are entitled to counsel and a defense.
These Democrats disgrace on all these counts was, of course, their vote against confirmation for Adegbile the former head of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, to lead the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. Continue reading
*President Obama made it perfectly clear why he got more than a little emotional when he announced his My Brother’s Keeper initiative. He was one of those brothers who but for his initiative, luck, and a good support system could have easily slid into the spiral of poverty, drugs, violence, and possibly jail or an early grave.
That spiral has trapped slammed countless other poor minority and especially black males. Obama challenged government, corporations and foundations to kick in millions in funds and resources to deal with the minority male crisis.
While he also challenged minority males to take responsibility for their lives, he recognized that no matter how motivated an at risk male is that won’t demolish the rock like institutional and societal barriers that confront black males. The biggest of all is the staggering jobless rate among young black males, and much more.
*(Washington, DC) – The NAACP issued the following statements in response to President Obama’s new “My Brother’s Keeper” Initiative, a program to build ladders of opportunity for boys and young men of color.
From Lorraine C. Miller, NAACP Interim President and CEO:
“The positive force of this groundbreaking initiative will help counter the negatives influences these young men experience daily and will place them on a path to success,” stated NAACP Interim President and CEO Lorraine C. Miller.
*President Obama plans to announce on Tuesday the opening of two new manufacturing institutes in the Chicago and Detroit areas as part of a larger plan to use public-private partnerships to advance his agenda despite opposition from Republicans in Congress.
