At least that’s what someone thought when running into the man formerly known as Puff Daddy at Miami’s annual Art Basal.
The New York Post managed to get an explanation for the confusion from Jeffrey Deitch, an art dealer and collector who attended the Art Basal. According to the Post, Deitch bumped into Diddy at the event and said, “Hi Kanye…”
The mistake has apparently been a hard one to get past for Deitch, who is said to be “mortified” by his misidentification.
“There was a big crowd gathered at the entrance to an art fair booth. I asked the dealer what the commotion was about and she said, ‘Kanye is here,’” Deitch the Post while detailing how the mistake happened. “I could only see the person from the back, and went over to say ‘Hi Kanye.’ To my great embarrassment, it turned out to be P Diddy. He thought it was very funny, especially since we had spent several hours together visiting my street art show in Los Angeles.”
And there you have it. A case of mistaken identity only to be laughed off by the victim. The moral of the story: Get your celebrities straight before casually greeting them at a crowded event. If not, then the result is an extended guilt trip while being haunted by the laughter of the celebrity who can now sign autographs under his new assumed name.
*After Diana Ross emerged hobbling from an overseas birthday party thrown by Naomi Campbell for her boyfriend, the supermodel was herself on crutches at yet another birthday bash she hosted for her man – this time held stateside at the Florida home of Sean “P. Diddy” Combs.
On Friday, the British supermodel arrived at Diddy’s crib in a golf cart after suffering a torn ligament. She welcomed such guests as Lenny Kravitz, Demi Moore, Missy Elliott, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian to the rapper’s Star Island home in Miami in honor of Vladislav Doronin’s recent 50th birthday.
The 250 guests were served Diddy’s Ciroc vodka and Veuve Cliquot champagne and the mogul toasted Naomi and the Russian billionaire midway through the evening. Diddy was also heard urging his pal Kanye to smile for photographers.
According to the New York Post, he told Ye: ”You always look moody.”
As previously reported, Naomi – who has been in a relationship with Vladislav since 2008 – recently threw a lavish party to mark her boyfriend’s birthday in Jaipur, India. There, they were joined by the likes of Moore, Kate Moss, Vivienne Westwood, Bob Geldof and Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, to enjoy a 1930s-themed dinner, with entertainment from Chaka Khan, Buddy Guy and Ross, who slipped and broke her ankle at the bash.
*Sean “P. Diddy” Combs threw the biggest party of the Cannes Film Festival so far on Tuesday night, inviting a host of celebrities to his harbor-side yacht for an evening of champagne, music, and dancing.
Kanye West and Kim Kardashian were the evening’s biggest names, casually climbing aboard the vessels and enjoying cocktails at the bar, according to WENN. The reality star wore a Pucci maxi skirt, while Kanye wore jeans and a hooded top. They were spotted leaving the yacht at around 4 a.m.
The bar was illuminated on the deck, making it visible from the Cannes streets.
Also in attendance were Michelle Rodriguez and Benicio del Toro, the latter of whom kept trying to dodge cameras. Adrien Brody was relaxed in jeans and a jacket, while Kelly Brook made two wardrobe changes — one while arriving, and one while onboard.
Nicole Scherzinger, Rita Ora and sibling socialites Paris and Nicki Hilton were also onboard.

*Janelle Monae was lauded by Essence magazine on Wednesday night at the magazine’s second-annual “Black Women in Music” pre-Grammy event.
Among those in attendance included Diddy, who is a backer of her label, and rapper Big Boi, who was an early supporter of Monae and performed with her at the event, reports the Associated Press.
Monae praised both for giving “a girl from Kansas” a shot.
Monae is nominated for best contemporary R&B album for her debut CD, “The ArchAndroid” and best urban/alternative performance for “Tightrope” with Big Boi.
