*Mashuntucket, Ct. was the site last Friday night where we saw the debut of SMS Promotions.
That’s Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson‘s company that promotes Yuriokis Gamboa, Andre Durrelle, and the now former IBF featherweight champion Billy Dib who lost his title on the very first venue that was being promoted by SMS.
And even though this in fact did happen with Dib going the distance with Evgeny Gradovich and losing by a split decision, the show itself turned out to be a success.
I’m sure that there were a lot of lessons learned here as to the art of boxing promoting. I mean you got to realize that Rome wasn’t built in a day and some of boxings greatest promoters didn’t have the instant success that they anticipated when they started out in the business.
I believe that Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is very intelligent and business savvy. And once he gets the right folks in place (matchmakers, publicist, sponsors, and good fighters) he’s going to be okay. There’s a lot of talent out there that needs to be discovered, and eventually will be.
I’ve read some of the comments people have made regarding him and I must say some of them are not flattering. But say what you want about him, you can’t say that he is not an audacious and bold man for stepping out and trying to do something positive.
That’s what made people like Don King and Bob Arum, who have been in the business longer than any of them, to be who they are.
So I say to all the naysayers out there, give the guy some time he’ll be all right.
We’re all looking forward to this weekend as Bernard ” The Executioner” Hopkins goes against Tavoris “Thunder” Cloud for the IBF light heavyweight championship at the Barclays Arena in Brooklyn, New York.
This could mark the end of Hopkins career, or it could start a new chapter in the continuing saga of it. Only God knows what’s going to happen at the end of the day. But this one thing is for sure, that it’s going to be an exciting night of boxing as we witness one of it’s legends attempt to do what none other has done, and that is win a title at 48 years of age.
Hopkins says he wants to beat Cloud and put Don King out of business. Well I’ll tell you what, it’s going to take a lot more than that to stop Don King. He’s still going strong at 83, and still promoting and traveling all over the world. How are you going to stop someone who’s been in the business as long as he has and has promoted some of the biggest fights in boxing history?(remember the “Rumble in the Jungle”, “Thrilla in Manila”, Tyson vs Holifield, and even Hopkins vs Trinidad?)
As I always say, we’ll see what happens.
This event is being brought to you by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions in association with Don King Productions and will be telecast live on HBO Championship Boxing this Saturday night.
The following weekend on March16 marks the return of Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley as he goes against Ruslan Provodnikov at the Home Depot Center out in Carson, Calif. This will also be an HBO Championship Boxing telecast. That’s all for now, talk to you later.
