Spelman, Morehouse, and Clark Atlanta University students support Amendment One to give students better education options in Georgia schools during a rally at the state Capitol, Friday, November 2, 2012.
*Charter schools have long been a controversial option to the public schools that students are normally zoned to attend.
When the charter schools began, education experts and school officials made the argument that they would be the end of the public school system or unfairly segregate students.
But, Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse, and Spelman students see the benefit in the charter option and are fighting for support of “Amendment One” on Tuesday’s ballot by marching on Georgia’s Capitol, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The current Georgia law commands that “charter school applicants must first apply to the local school board. If the application is rejected, they can appeal to the state Board of Education, which may overrule local officials.
Amendment One, if passed, would create a third route for approval, an appointed state commission.”

*Here’s some more good news about Miss Gabby Douglas.
The super 16-year-old Olympic champion gymnast is officially being recruited by one of the most prestigious black intuitions of higher learning. And that would be Spelman College.
TMZ is reporting that the school’s president even flew to London to get a leg up on the competition.
We’ve learned … Spelman — an all-girl college in Georgia — wants Gabby in a bad way … and sources at the University tell us the Team USA gymnastics superstar has become the number 1 recruit … by far.
In fact, the President of Spelman, Beverly Daniel Tatum, went out to London and made sure Gabby got a Spelman gift bag … containing a congratulatory note, school t-shirt and a CD containing a song produced by the college.
Tatum also released a statement to TMZ … in which she acknowledges the school would LOVE to get its hands on the gold medal winner:
“A young woman who has demonstrated the drive and discipline needed to achieve world-class excellence is likely to have what it takes to be successful at Spelman, and we would welcome her interest in the college.”
If you didn’t know, among others, the daughters of both Martin Luther King Jr. and Bill Cosby have attended Spelman
*It’s that time of the year. That would be graduation time, to be specific.
That means colleges and universities are going all out to get the high profile names to give their commencement speeches. One of the highest profile people in the world, Oprah Winfrey, has accepted the invitation to give Spelman College’s 2012 commencement address, according to the Atlantic Journal-Constitution.
The college’s graduation ceremony is set for May 20 at the George International Convention Center. Some 550 students are expected to graduate.
Ms. Winfrey is no stranger to Spelman. She received an honorary degree from the college in 1993 and will be given the National Community Service Award this year.
Meanwhile, another high profile person – First Lady Michelle Obama – has accepted invitations to speak at three graduations: Virginia Tech, North Carolina A&T and Oregon State University, at which her brother coaches men’s basketball.
