*Russell Simmons has made history again by becoming the first member of the Hip Hop community to get a postage stamp.
On Tuesday, PETA released a series of stamps that feature the 20 most influential vegetarians, including the mogul, a 13-year vegan.
Others include Sir Paul McCartney, Ellen DeGeneres, Natalie Portman, Morrissey and historic figures like Gandhi, Leonardo da Vinci, Leo Tolstoy and Pythagoras.
“These are very influential people, and not everyone knows that these folks are vegetarian,” PETA VP Lisa Lange told the N.Y. Daily News. “It’s just another way to be able to talk about what animals go through in slaughterhouses.”
Simmons hasn’t been a quiet mouse on the issue. In 2008 he mentioned to the press, “The consumption of animals causes more harm to the environment than all forms of transportation put together.”
The stamps are available at www.PETA.org.
*Stamp prices will rise by one cent – to 45 cents – starting January 22, 2012, the US Postal Service (USPS) announced Tuesday.
The proposed first-class stamp – aka the forever stamp – price hike is part of a series of changes that would additionally boost the price of a postcard from 29 cents to 32 cents and also raise the cost of sending international letters, standard mail, packages and periodicals.
“The overall average price increase is small and is needed to help address our current financial crisis,” Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe explained in a statement to the press. “We continue to take actions within our control to increase revenue in other ways and to aggressively cut costs. To return to sound financial footing we urgently need enactment of comprehensive, long-term legislation to provide the Postal Service with a more flexible business model.”
