77-Year-Old Champion Sprinter Inspires Others While ‘Working Towards the World Record’

rose green *As a champion sprinter with a serious competitive streak, Rose Green is a true example of never being too old to conquer.

The Prince George’s County competitive runner, who turned 77 on Sunday (May 24), has made an impressive impact among those in her age group, with winning medals in the 200 meters and the 400 meters. And did we mention that Green is the American record holder in the 60-meter sprint?

Not bad for someone who’s also a great-grandmother and described by her coach and boyfriend Cortez Austin as “world class.”

According to the MyFoxDC.com, Green took up sprinting last year and trains as many as seven days a week with Austin. While she has accomplished a lot in her short time as a runner, Green credits the reputation associated with the great tradition of Jamaican sprinters.

“This older guy, he’s 91 now — he always said to me, ‘You are a Jamaican. You were born to sprint. Why don’t you go ahead and do the sprints?’” Green shared with MyFoxDC.

In addition to sprinting, Green can be found teaching weight training at the Cameron Grove adult community, where she is seen as an inspiration by her students and fellow runners.

“She is like a celebrity,” said Austin. “It’s no question that she is an inspiration.”

“I hear that so many times that I’m starting to believe that I’m an inspiration to all these people,” Green said.

Despite them being an item, Austin is not one to give Green any special treatment.

“I think of myself as a very nice coach,” he told MyFoxDC. “She might not think that.”

“He’ll tell me, ‘Your form is not right, you’re not going as fast as you should,’” Green said. “He’s a very strict coach even though we are lovers.”

Although Green runs for fun, her competitive side has a much bigger goal in mind.

“I’m working towards the world record,” she said. “Why not?”

On deck for Green is the outdoor national championships and the national senior championships, which she is currently training for. Both events are set to take place in July.
