*A lawyer representing the Florida man who injured George Zimmerman in a shooting incident on Monday said his client was acting in self-defense.
“He simply maintained that he acted in self-defense,” attorney Mark NeJame said at a press conference Monday night. “We see everything to suggest that that is correct.”
NeJame represents Matthew Apperson, who also had a run-in with Zimmerman in September when he called police claiming Zimmerman threatened to kill him.
According to Zimmerman attorney Don West, Apperson fired a bullet at Zimmerman’s vehicle, hitting the driver’s side window. Zimmerman suffered minor injuries after the window shattered. He was not hit by the bullet.
Apperson claims Zimmerman waved a gun at him prior to the shooting, which Zimmerman’s lawyers deny.
“George absolutely denies having shown it, waved, displayed, pointed it,” West said of Zimmerman’s gun.
Zimmerman has had several gun-related run-ins with the law, notably the shooting death of Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26, 2012. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain, shot and killed Martin, 17, after Zimmerman reported a “suspicious person” in the neighborhood. After trying to follow him, Zimmerman claims Martin attacked him and he shot him in self-defense.
Martin was unarmed, and his death and Zimmerman’s acquittal sparked critical conversations about Florida’s controversial “stand your ground” self-defense laws.
Zimmerman also has been arrested multiple times following domestic violence complaints from various women. None of those cases have been prosecuted after victims either asked to drop charges or recanted their stories.
