*Marquette University has taken down a mural that celebrated Assata Shakur.

Shukur, who escaped from prison after being convicted of killing a police officer, is on the FBI’s Most Wanted list under her birth name, Joanne Chesimard.

The mural, which had been on display in the student union’s Gender and Sexuality Resource Center, was taken down Monday after a suspended professor noticed it on the center’s Facebook page.

“I didn’t do any brilliant investigative journalism,” John McAdams told WISN-TV. “I just read the Facebook page.”

Shakur was convicted in the 1973 murder of a New Jersey state trooper and sentenced to life in prison. She escaped prison in 1979 and later fled to Cuba, where she is thought to still be living. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $1 million for information directly leading to Shakur’s apprehension.

The mural featured two quotes attributed to Shakur, a member of the Black Liberation Army.

“No one is going to give you the education you need to overthrow them,” one of the quotes reads.

In a statement Sunday, Marquette University said the mural was “extremely disappointing” and that the school is reviewing the matter:

Our university’s senior leadership just became aware of a mural that was created and displayed in a remote area of campus. This is extremely disappointing as the mural does not reflect the Guiding Values of Marquette University. It is being removed immediately. We are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the mural and will take appropriate action.

McAdams was suspended by the university in December after defending a student who was accused of making homophobic comments while discussing gay marriage.

“Like the rest of academia, Marquette is less and less a real university,” McAdams wrote on his blog. “And when gay marriage cannot be discussed — certainly not a Catholic university.”
