Pilots Featuring DaCosta, Merkerson & Hughley Ordered by NBC

nbc-logo*The time for networks to order new TV pilots has come and gone, with NBC putting in early series orders for three new shows featuring black actors in starring or supporting roles.

The shows include “Chicago Med, ” a drama starring Yaya DaCosta and S. Epatha Merkerson and Oliver Platt as well as “Blindspot,” a crime-thriller series starring Jaimie Alexander and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. Rounding out the trio is “Heartbreaker,” which boasts starring roles for Melissa George and D.L. Hughley,

The following is a more detailed list of the three pilots NBC ordered via Shadow and Act, along with a synopsis and list of cast members:

1. “Chicago Med” – From executive producer Dick Wolf comes the newest installment of his “Chicago” drama franchise, which is described as “an emotional thrill ride through the day-to-day chaos of the city’s most explosive hospital and the courageous team of doctors who hold it together. They will tackle unique new cases inspired by topical events, forging fiery relationships in the pulse-pounding pandemonium of the emergency room, and through it all, familiar faces from the Chicago police and fire departments will intertwine as this third team of Chicago heroes hits the ground running.” In starring roles are: Yaya DaCosta, S. Epatha Merkerson, Oliver Platt, and Laurie Holden. “Chicago Fire” creators, Derek Haas and Michael Brandt, will write and executive-produce with Matt Olmstead and Dick Wolf.

2. “Blindspot” – From executive producer Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “The Flash”) comes a new crime-thriller series that follows a “vast international plot” that explodes when “a beautiful Jane Doe is discovered naked in Times Square, completely covered in mysterious, intricate tattoos with no memory of who she is or how she got there. There’s one that’s very clear, however: the name of FBI agent Kurt Weller, emblazoned across her back. “Jane Doe,” Agent Weller and rest of the FBI quickly realize that each mark on her body is a crime to solve, leading them closer to the truth about her identity and the mysteries to be revealed.” The starring cast includes Jaimie Alexander, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Ashley Johnson, Sullivan Stapleton, Rob Brown, Audrey Esparza, and Ukweli Roach. Martin Gero will write and executive-produce with Greg Berlanti.

3 – “Heartbreaker” (formerly “Heart Matters”) – Based on the real life and achievements of Dr. Kathy Magliato, the character-driven medical drama follows Dr. Alex Panttiere, “an outspoken world-renowned heart-transplant surgeon and one of the few women in her field. Stubborn and fearless, Alex always operates on her own terms. She revels in a racy personal life that’s a full-time job in itself, manages the daily demands of skeptical faculty and dutiful interns, and pushes the boundaries of medical science to impressive new heights.” The starring cast includes: Melissa George, Dave Annable, Don Hany, D.L. Hughley, Shelley Conn, Maya Erskine, Joshua Leonard, J. Louis Mills, and Rudy Martinez.

NBC’s interest in the pilots comes as networks gear up to announce which pilots will become series that will popular the next TV season.
