*Marriage is usually done with a lot of love, but for Tyrese Gibson, his union with ex-wife Norma Mitchell was more of a business arrangement.
Mitchell’s name came into a recent interview Gibson did with Power 105.1’s Angie Martinez. According to the singer-actor, the marriage was done just because Mitchell was pregnant and he wanted to keep her in the U.S.
“That marriage was a marriage, but it wasn’t really a marriage…She’s from London, and we had a baby on the way. When immigration is calling you gotta do what you gotta to do so that someone you have a child with doesn’t get banned for ten years. I did it to keep her in the country,” Gibson told Martinez.
“I don’t want to say what I did, but I did it to keep her in the country. You know, I was raised without a father. So imagine me having to travel all the way to London just to see my daughter. That’s not going to open. So what can we do to fix this? And we did it. She sacrificed. I sacrificed. We gotta do what we gotta do. There’s a child involved. The baby is not coming on her own. That’s the truth.”
As the interview progressed, Gibson implied that although he and Mitchell were expecting a child at the time, their time was husband and wife was more of a business arrangement than an emotional commitment.
“We had a very extensive prenuptial agreement. We had a plan.,” Gibson shared. “We know why we’re getting married. Everything that’s mine is mine, and vice versa. So we’re going to do this, and we gotta do what we gotta do on behalf of our angel.”
Gibson’s comments come after Mitchell opened up about her time with the entertainer earlier this year as she accused Gibson of physically and mentally abusing her during the course of their relationship. Despite the end of their relationship in 2009, Mitchell stated that the abuse continued with Gibson using their daughter and the family court system to terrorize her.
“A lot of men are using the legal system to control women and to put them in a state of fear,” Mitchell told MadameNoire.com. “A few of the things that have happened to me that I know have happened to other women is being followed and surveyed. That’s not something fun. It makes you anxious. You know, just provoking you and harassing you with emails. That overwhelms women and it puts you in a fear state.”
“A lot of men with money and more power, especially with passive women, are using the legal system to abuse these women,” she continued. “Then they can point the finger and say, ‘Look at her, she’s crazy,’ because one day you just explode and can’t take it anymore.”
Mitchell went to detail when she met Gibson, saying the meeting occurred when she a young college student. The encounter eventually resulted in Mitchell coming to the U.S. after Gibson all but begged her parents to allow her to leave the country with him.
As it stands now, Gibson hasn’t responded to Mitchell’s allegations.
