*Washington, D.C. — On August 21, 2015, prominent D.C. Businessman, Dr. Lorenzo Brown, PhD, Co-founder, President, and Managing Editor, Sister-2-Sister Magazine, and husband of Celebrity Pop Culture Journalist, Co-founder, and owner of Sister-2-Sister Magazine, Jamie Foster Brown, succumbed to cancer after a lengthy illness. He was 74.
Sister-2-Sister Magazine, founded in 1988 as a family-owned business included their two sons, Randall and Russell. It was one of the nation’s most widely read celebrity monthlies. The magazine discontinued its print version last year in favor of its website, www.s2smagazine.com. At its height, the publication and website reached 1.8 million readers.
A memorial service for Dr. Brown is scheduled for Monday, August 31, 2015, at 6pm at the Zion Church, (First Baptist Church of Glenarden), 3600 Brightseat Road, Landover, Maryland, 20785.
Married for over 46 years to his soul mate and love of his life, Jamie Foster Brown, Lorenzo graduated from Evanston (IL) Township High School, received his Bachelor’s degree from Roosevelt University, in Chicago, IL, and his Master’s degree from Syracuse University, both in Economics. In a chance encounter, Lorenzo and Jamie met in the cafeteria of his undergraduate alma mater, Roosevelt University. They married (6) six months later, then moved to Stockholm, Sweden, where he received his Doctorate in Economics from the University of Stockholm.
Brown’s dissertation, “Return to Scale Economics,” was selected by the University of Stockholm as a textbook for the economics curriculum.
While in Stockholm, Lorenzo and Jamie traveled and studied extensively throughout Europe. And, while living in Sweden, the Browns welcomed the births of their sons, Randall and Russell.
Upon returning to the United States in 1978, Lorenzo and Jamie settled in Washington, D.C.
Lorenzo, who was active in the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement, taught Economics at Howard University, and became a prolific author of articles on race, including: “Why Should Black Owned Businesses Hire Predominately Black Labor Forces,” published in the Review of Black Political Economy. He also taught Economics at Miles College, an HBCU in Birmingham, Alabama.
After leaving Howard University, Lorenzo then went to work for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), while concurrently consulting for the C&P Telephone Company, now Verizon.
In 1992, Lorenzo left FERC to work full-time with Jamie, where as Co-founder of Sister-2-Sister Magazine, he also served as President and Managing Editor…and the rest in history.
Dr. Lorenzo Brown, PhD, was born on December 26, 1941 to the late Claude and Mabel O’Neil Brown. He was the youngest of their seven (7) children. Although he was raised in Marion, Alabama, he was born in Selma, since Marion did not have a hospital that would allow African-American births. He was baptized as a member of the Zion Methodist Church, in Marion, Alabama. Eventually, Lorenzo and his siblings migrated from Alabama to Evanston, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.
Lorenzo, whose friends oftentimes referred to him as “Renny” or simply, “Big Lo,” is being remembered as always displaying the most infectious smile. Full of love, humility, kindness, generosity, compassion, thoughtfulness, helpfulness and fun, Lorenzo loved fishing, tennis and watching basketball; and, his family and friends always bragged that “no one could grill ribs and chicken like Big Lo.”
In addition to his wife of 46 years, Jamie Foster Brown, Lorenzo leaves behind two sons, Randall and Russell of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Octavia Harriston (Jim); Edna Russell (Charlie); and, Geraldine Williams; two sisters-in-law, Stella Foster and Shirley Hunter (Larry); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other extended family, and wide circle of dear friends.
