City Councilman Tasered in Same Town Sandra Bland Was Arrested

Prairie-View-Texas-councilman Jonathan Miller*Prairie View, Texas is finding itself in a negative light again. It’s also infamous as the town where Sandra Bland was arrested. Now this.

ABC 13 reports the town served as the location of an incident regarding local police and Prairie View city councilman Jonathan Miller (pictured) that involved the same deputy who arrested Bland.

According to Prairie View police, four men, who were guests of Miller’s, were being questioned about drug activity Thursday night (Oct. 8) when Miller came outside to join his friends and check on them. Once he saw the authorities, Miller tried to intervene.

“After repeated commands to step back, Mr. Miller was told that he was being placed under arrest for interfering with the investigation. Once officers attempted to arrest Miller, he physically resisted. Mr. Miller continued to resist, even after repeated commands to stop,” a statement from the police department said.

A video of the encounter that was filmed by a friend of Miller’s captured the 26-year-old politician saying, “Officer, please do not put your hands on me! I live here.”

Miller is later shown to not move while refusing to put his hands behind his back after being told by the male and female officer present. The officers end up tasing Miller, who falls to the ground, crying out in pain.

“Oh yeah, he’s going to jail for resisting,” an officer says.

Miller was charged with interference and resisting arrest, according to ABC 13, which noted that he was released on bond Friday (Oct. 9) morning.

Addressing the incident and the arresting officer, Prairie View Chief of Police Larry Johnson noted the chances of the same officer who arrested Bland being involved in Miller’s situation as well as whether the officer’s conduct raises any concern.

“We have six police officers. The probability of having the same officer involved in multiple types of incidences is probable,” Johnson said. “I haven’t seen anything that gave me any cause for concern as far as this officers conduct at this point.”

Miller’s altercation with law enforcement marks the latest controversial incident to emerge from Prairie View. In July, Bland was found dead in her jail cell three days after she was arrested for supposedly assaulting a police officer at a traffic stop in the city. Arrest records and local media point out that Bland was accused of becoming combative and assaulting the officer.

Although her hanging was ruled a suicide by the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office, Bland’s family and friends have voiced their doubts about the official version of what happened. An investigation surrounding the case is currently taking place.
