*LisaRaye McCoy’s directorial debut titled “SKINNED” confronts colorism and the global skin lightening epidemic. The film debuted Jan. 9 on TV One and highlights the important issues of color, self-esteem and acceptance on the black community.
“We set out to produce a film not only to address the global epidemic, but more importantly, the history among people of color regarding the way we think and the acceptance of our given gifts,” said McCoy. “SKINNED will impact those who are struggling with their own identity and self-worth. There hasn’t been a film to address this epidemic since Spike Lee’s School Daze touched on the subject matter.”
While promoting the film, LisaRaye criticized a popular a skin bleaching product called Whitenicious, claiming the product causes cancer. The creator of Whitenicious is a self-hating aspiring artist named Dencia. She caught wind of LisaRaye’s comments and took to Twitter to threaten the actress-turned director with legal action.
