Whoopi Goldberg Would Rather ‘B*tch’ Than Boycott 2016 Oscars

Whoopi Goldberg*Whoopi Goldberg says she’s not going to boycott the 2016 Academy Awards because of the lack of diversity, but she will “continue to bitch as I have all year round because I’m tired of seeing movies where no one is represented except a bit of the population, not all of it,” she told her “The View” co-hosts.

Goldberg is one of just seven black actresses to win an Academy Award over the past 87 years, and while she’s pissed about the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, she’s questioning critics such as Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett-Smith – who are calling for a boycott of this year’s award show. Whoopi is wondering why this is a “conversation that we only have once a year?”

“Every year we get all fired up and the rest of the year nobody says anything,” Goldberg said.

She believes the call for a boycott is unfair to this year’s host, Chris Rock. “To boycott him seems just as bad as what everybody is saying,” she said. “We have this conversation every year and it pisses me off.”

Whoopi echoed what many industry players have said, that the problem is not with the voters, but with those greenlighting the films.

“I make movies for a living. Let me tell you what the problem is. It’s not that the people nominating are too white,” Goldberg said, defending the Academy, which was 93% white and 76% male as of 2013. “The problem is the people who can be helping to make movies that have blacks and Latinos and women and all that, that money doesn’t come to you because the idea is that there’s no place for black movies.”

While Will Smith believes there’s no racism in Hollywood, his wife Jada is leading the vanguard to push for more diversity on the big screen. Meanwhile, Whoopi believes boycotting is pointless and “a slap in the face of Chris Rock.”

“Boycotting doesn’t work and it’s also a slap in the face of Chris Rock,” Goldberg said. “So I’m not going to boycott, but I’m going to continue to bitch as I have all year round because I’m tired of seeing movies where no one is represented except a bit of the population, not all of it.”

Chris Rock has yet to respond to the uproar or to calls for him to back out as host. He did, however, joke about the controversy in a promotional tweet last week.
