*Four moms dubbed The Mama Mafia pay tribute to America’s favorite black mother, the fierce and fiery Cookie Lyon character from the hit TV series “Empire,” with their hilarious song “This is My Empire.”
In the video posted by Awestruck to YouTube on Monday, a cop interrogates the moms over charges of impersonating Lyon. These “mother-loving Cookie monsters” explain to him just how “bout that mommy life” they are. Check out the music video below, which is backed by a trap beat.
“Got these bake sales on lock/ Slanging these cookies on the block/ Shortbreads, Thin Mints, Samoas, Troop Mama Mafia’s on top,” one mom raps.
The Mama Mafia is a group of black actresses and comedians who are “balancing the trials and triumphs of motherhood one sketch at a time.” The mafia consists of: Angel Laketa Moore (“ER,” “Good Luck Charlie,” “The Mom’s View”), Dinora Walcott (“Scandal,” “Mike and Molly”), Quin Walters (“Prime Suspect,” “The Q&A Show”) and Angelina Spicer (“The Conan O’Brien Show,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “The Real”).

Taraji P. Henson’s portrayal as Cookie Lyon has earned her the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series, and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama in 2016, and she was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
During an interview earlier this year, Henson explained the significance of how she tackled Cookie.
“It was very important to me that [Cookie Lyon] not be sassy and neck-rollin’ and eye-bulgin’ and attitude all the time,” she said. “Everything she does is coming from a place of fighting for her family. That’s why she’s not a caricature.”
Last year during VH1’s Big in 2015 With Entertainment Weekly awards ceremony, Taraji discussed why she thinks Cookie resonates so strongly with viewers.
“She says the things people are afraid to say, she does the things people maybe don’t have the balls to do. But it seems like it’s coming from a real, true place,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “She’s not a mean person. Whenever she acts out, it’s because she’s taking up for herself, and rightfully so. And people see that.”
