NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio Defends Controversial ‘C.P. Time’ Skit

bill-de-blasio*Days after participating in a controversial skit with Hillary Clinton, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is defending the racial term he uttered in the skit to score laughs.

The skit in question was performed during the New York’s Inner Circle dinner on Saturday (April 9). Walking out onstage after de Blasio practiced rapping with “Hamilton” actor Leslie Odom Jr., Clinton teased the mayor about taking too long to introduce her.

“I came out blazing with heavy artillery, for the queen of Democrats, my home girl, Hillary,” de Blasio rapped as Clinton arrived onstage.

“I heard my name,” the Democratic presidential frontrunner said. “I just have to say, thanks for the endorsement, Bill. It took you long enough.”

“Sorry Hillary, I was running on CP time,” said de Blasio said, as he referenced the phrase, which is used by black people to describe why they are running late.

Upon hearing de Blasio’s remark, Odom responded, saying, “That’s not — I don’t like jokes like that, Bill.”

To which Clinton replied, “Cautious politician time. I’ve been there,” replied Clinton

Although de Blasio was under the impression that the skit, which mocked black people, would be a hit since he’s married to a black woman, it didn’t quite go over as well as he thought with his black constituents. The audience was in a confused state like Clinton as the hand-picked New York journalists and various movers and shakers applauded politely

Realizing how the skit came across as offensive, de Blasio addressed the situation through a spokesperson that claimed the mayor was simply mocking himself.

“Let’s be clear, in an evening of satire, the only person this was meant to mock was the mayor himself,” the spokesperson said. “Certainly no one intended to offend anyone.”

Providing more insight into the situation, de Blasio told CBS Anchor Erin Burnett on Monday (April 11)  that the skit was intended to turn a negative stereotype on its head.
