Larry Wilmore: Shut Up! – N**ger * N**ga Are Two Different Things

Larry Wilmore

*Larry Wilmore wants to set people straight about his speech and toast to president Barack Obama at the White House Correspondents Dinner on Saturday; after which tongues were waggin’ and fingers pointing — from blacks and whites– at his use of the word n*gga.

But it was after Piers Morgan, a white man, decided to write a lengthy think piece about the issue that Wilmore felt it best to give a quick lesson on usage, context and reclamation to him and anyone else criticizing his move.

Morgan’s most recent piece was aimed at why Wilmore shouldn’t have said “n****r,” and claimed  Wilmore’s “stunt” was demeaning and backed the president into a corner of “excruciating discomfort.”

A statement from the The White House the very next day said Obama “appreciated the spirit of Mr. Wilmore’s expressions on Saturday night.” And his usage of the word was “No biggie.”

But here is where Wilmore’s lesson plan zoomed in for clarification on what he actually said versus what he is being accused of saying, and its context.

“[Morgan] quoted me as saying ‘Yo, Barry, you did it my n****r.’”

“Now hold on. Are you saying that I called the president a n****r? OK, that’s horrible. I would never do that.”

“‘N****r’ is what white people use to denigrate, demean and dehumanize black people and  ‘n***a’ is a term of endearment some black people use between each other to take back that power.”

Wilmore has a message for Morgan and any other critics who has taken it upon themselves to alter his words.

“Stop calling us that,” he stated, adding, “Conjugate the slur. And then, also, don’t use it.”

Know the difference.
