*The July 12 opening night of Motown The Musical on Broadway was followed immediately (as in, right after the curtain call) with sad news that the show would be closing four months early (as in, the end of this month).

The musical’s return to Broadway was supposed to run until Nov. 13, with Chester Gregory starring as Berry Gordy, alongside Allison Semmes as Diana Ross, Jesse Nager as Smokey Robinson and Jarran Muse as Marvin Gaye.

But producers, faced with lukewarm box-office sales, will now stop the bleeding after the July 31 performance.

The musical is told from the perspective of founder Gordy, who wrote the story. Directed by Charles Randolph-Wright and featuring a book by Gordy, Motown The Musical opened April 14, 2013, at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. It closed after 775 performances on January 18, 2015, and recouped its initial investment.

The first national tour of Motown The Musical opened in Chicago in April 2014 and continues around the country. A London production began performances February 11, 2016.
