*HBO’s latest big-budget drama “Westworld” is based on the 1973 sci-fi film written and directed by novelist Michael Crichton. The series tells the story of a futuristic theme park called Westworld and has been described as “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.”
Developed by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, with J. J. Abrams serving as an executive producer, “Westworld” stars Sir Anthony Hopkins, Jeffrey Wright, Thandie Newton, James Marsden, Evan Rachel Wood, and Ed Harris as the “Man in Black.”
“I saw the original years ago, and then my agent said that Jonah wanted to cast me and would I read the script,” Sir Anthony Hopkins said during TCA back in July. “Then we met, and I was intrigued by it, and so I said yes.”
Hopkins plays Dr. Robert Ford, the brilliant creative director of Westworld, and during HBO’s TCA 2016 Summer Press Tour, EUR/Electronic Urban Report asked the legendary actor if he relates in any way to that which motivates his character.
“No,” he replied. “I don’t get into the head space of a character I’m supposed to be playing,” he told us when asked if there’s one particular question that he asked himself while preparing to play Dr. Ford. The Academy Award-winning actor also noted how he’s often cast as a “control freak” and “I don’t know why,” he said.
“Because I’m not that at all. I have a kind of diffident attitude about things, which has come with age, I guess, over the years,” Hopkins said. “But they are fascinating parts to play, so obviously I can tap into some. What I can say is that I keep it really very simple, learn the text, and it’s just maybe then correcting for an actor to see. But, for me, the identity is just in the text, following common sense and logic, listening to the director, making some suggestions here and there.”
Catch the series premiere of “Westworld” on October 2 at 9pm on HBO.
