*Two-time Oscar-winner Denzel Washington is in talks to star in Dan Gilroy’s legal drama “Inner City,” the writer-director’s follow-up to his critically-acclaimed indie thriller, “Nightcrawler.”

Oscar-nominated producer Jennifer Fox will also produce the film. Fox previously worked with Gilroy on “Nightcrawler,” which grossed $32.4 million domestically on an $8.5 million budget and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Riz Ahmed, and Rene Russo.

Variety reports Gilroy’s original script is similar in tone to Sidney Lumet’s 1982 classic “The Verdict,” in which a lawyer who pushes a medical malpractice case to trial as he attempts to save his own career.

Principal photography is set to commence in March 2017. Cross Creek Pictures will serve as co-financers on a budget reportedly set below $40 million.

Washington can currently be seen in “The Magnificent Seven.”  Here’s what Washington said about that project:

“I read the script and thought, ‘This is a good idea, it’s fun: just to shoot guns and ride horses.’ And I knew that we were going to win,” he laughs. “I had never ridden that much before and I liked feeding my horse and washing him. Equine therapy is really good for the soul.”

The UK Telegraph also notes how critics have compared his screen presence to John Wayne in his prime.

“My father was a minister so we grew up in a church and we didn’t go to the movies,” Denzel says. “King of Kings and The Ten Commandments and that was it. Appearing in a Western wasn’t like some childhood dream.”

The 61-year-old has been married to the same woman, Pauletta Pearson, for 33 years and has two sons, aged 31 and 25, and two daughters, aged 28 and 25.

“When I turned 60, I looked in the mirror and I said, ‘You know, this ain’t the dress rehearsal, Denzel, so what do you want to do with the rest of your life? What quality of life do you want?’ So you simplify things, you try to drink more water and you try to eliminate the negative things in your life.”
