Kirk Franklin Slams TBN & Whoopi Goldberg Sells Ugly Christmas Sweaters

Kirk Franklin

*Gospel icon Kirk Franklin spoke out against racial justice at the recently held GMA Dove Awards show in Nashville, Tennessee. He took home the prestigious Gospel Artist Of The Year award and delivered a passionate plea urging Christian artists to help him promote racial healing.

“I want to say something to everyone in a spirit of humility, a spirit of meekness, and a spirit of Christ-like love, outside of this building, there is chaos and calamity in the world, and there’s so much hurt and distrust and I have a lot of friends in this room of many different shades and colors that I’ve walked out life for the last 23 years with. Great men and women in the contemporary Christian community,” he began his speech about the racial divide.

“And to all of us, I do not like that the world is controlling the narrative. It should be us controlling the narrative. Whether it’s bad preachers, bad police, bad politicians, we have the spirit of redemption when we speak,” he said.

Franklin spoke to the Tom Joyner Morning Show about his disappointment in the television network for editing his speech.

“The churches silence on this is becoming very numb. We should be disappointed. We should be controlling the narrative and not the world. We should be leading the charge. The response that night was incredible. The audience is 85% white. It was a standing ovation…TBN edited it! Usually television shows edit for commercials but TBN doesn’t have commercials,” Franklin said.

Whoopi Goldberg has designed nine “ugly Christmas sweaters” to go on sale at Lord & Taylor and Hudson’s Bay beginning Tuesday.

“I’ve always liked them,” Goldberg told the New York Times. “They make me happy. I’ve worn them for many years. I thought about all the things I’d love to see on a sweater.

The sweaters retail for $139 each and are made from wool, alpaca, cashmere and cotton. And the designs range from an octopus-Menorah mash-up to images of both black and white Santa Clauses, per Page Six.

“You might start right after Thanksgiving, and wear them all the way through Hanukkah and New Year’s and then you’re done for another 12 months until it rolls around again,” she says. “Anything before Thanksgiving is too early. I’m old school. I come from the protocol of ‘O.K., here’s Halloween and then you have Thanksgiving.’ No Christmas at Halloween.”

This is Goldberg’s first foray into the fashion world, but if her sweaters sale is a success, she may design other items.

“I’d love to design holiday footwear,” Goldberg mused. “I’d love to design housewares. If you’re going to have things in the house, you might as well not be bored by them.”
