*It was nearly 21 years ago when fans of Phyllis Hyman were rocked by news of her suicide. Now, actress Sheryl Lee Ralph steps behind the lens to produce a musical that will highlight Hyman’s life and career and possibly answer many questions that the music world was left wondering following her death.

The forthcoming musical titled “An Evening With Phyllis Hyman” is hoping to put some of the pieces together while at the same time highlighting her hit singles from the late 1970s to early 1990s, which included “You Know How to Love Me,” “Living All Alone,” and “Don’t Wanna Change the World.”

Hyman was also well-known as first cousin of actor Earle Hyman, who can be remembered for his recurring role on “The Cosby Show” as Russel Huxtable, Cliff’s father. She also starred in the 1981 musical “Sophisticated Ladies,” which was based on the music of Duke Ellington.

On June 30, 1995 and just shy of 46, Hyman committed suicide in 1995 after overdosing on prescription pills and left a note that read: I’m tired. I’m tired. Those of you that I love know who you are. May God Bless you.

The musical will center on “the untold story of the life, career and music of the singer/songwriter and actress in her own words,” writes CentricTV.com. It will also include the vocal powerhouses’ catalog which spans from the 1970s to the early 90s.

Sheryl Lee Ralph made her screen debut in the 1977 comedy film “A Piece of the Action,” before landing her breakthrough role as Deena Jones in the 1981 Broadway musical “Dreamgirls,” for which she received Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical.
