*Mamoudou Athie is one of those rising talents we will be hearing a lot about—and it doesn’t hurt to be suave, talk, dark and handsome. Fresh out of Yale Drama School—and he is the first to tell you how blessed he is—Mamoudou landed a role in Netflix’s “The Get Down” as Grandmaster Flash.
Since that time he has starred in “The Circle” with Tom Hanks, NBC’s comedy “Me & Mean Margaret” with Stockard Channing, and later this year “Unicorn Store,” directed and starring Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, and John Cusak.
“Patti Cake$,” out this week, stars Mamoudou as Patti’s (Danielle Macdonald) muse. He says, “Making it was one of the best acting experiences I ever had.” Besides the role and the script, he says the cast and crew all had a great vibe going. “I knew going in, just the fact that Geremy [Jasper] (director and writer) was at the helm, it was going to be a great experience.
Patti, an unlikely New Jersey rapper, finds her niche as a one-of-a-kind hip-hop voice. “Patti Cake$” chronicles an underdog’s quest for fame and glory with humor, raw energy, and pulsating beats. “Patti” also stars MC Lyte, Cathy Moriarty, Siddharth Dhananjay, Patrick Brana, and Wass Stevens.
