Bernie Casey, Actor, Former NFL Player, Dies at 78

Unfortunately, we have sad news to report about Bernie Casey.  The beloved actor passed away today in a Los Angeles hospital at the age of 78

Casey was known for his roles in “I’m Gonna it You Sucka,” and “Revenge of the Nerds” among others. He also put time in as a player in the NFL where he was a Pro Bowl wide receiver.

According to Bernie’s rep, he died peacefully,  surrounded by his loved ones. The rep says Casey fell ill suddenly recently, and had spent the last few days hospitalized. As of this posting, the cause of death has not been revealed.

Born in Wyco, West Virginia, in 1939, Casey was an athlete before entering the acting world, first in track and field for Bowling Green State University and later as a professional football player for the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams in the late 60s.

After he left the NFL, it didn’t take long for Casey’s acting career to take off with a role in “Guns of the Magnificent Seven.” His athletic background served him well in the classic made for TV film “Brian’s Song,” in which he played the team captain for the Chicago Bears.

Casey’s film and TV credits also include “Harris and Company,” “The Martian Chronicles,” “Cleopatra Jones,” “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka,” “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.”

All-in-all, Casey went on to appear in nearly 80 different projects — most notably he was the national head of the Tri Lams in ‘Nerds’ … and neighborhood activist John Slade in ‘Sucka.’ He was also in “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.”

Besides acting, Bernie Casey also had a passion for painting and poetry.
